Did you know that this week is Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK? 🫶 The theme is ‘Take Action’, to highlight the importance of turning awareness into meaningful change. It’s a great time to explore your local area and visit places that you’ve perhaps been curious about but never been to. Getting out and about and discovering new things is a great way to boost your confidence and mental wellbeing without the pressure of commitment. If you live in or near the Bexley Borough, there are plenty of green walks with woodlands and riverside trails that you can follow. You can capture photos along your journey, and take a minute to pause and write down what you’re feeling in the moment. It’s a simple idea, with plenty of benefits. Of course, you can visit us at The Exchange, explore our garden, and find out about our workshops that you can get involved in if you want to try something new. Remember we have the Little Book Stop situated in the garden, near The Garden Room, so you can swap or borrow a book, and Board Games Club, as well as Crafters Club, which you can join for free on Thursdays from 6 - 8 pm. Let us know if you’re doing something new this week. 👇 #TakeAction #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #ExploreLondon #Bexley #SELondon

The London Borough of Bexley welcomed the Deputy Mayor for Children and Families, Joanne McCartney, this week for a visit to St Catherine’s Catholic School for Girls — one of two Bexley schools participating in the Mental Health in Schools Project. Members of the Schools team were on hand to meet the Deputy Mayor to see the progress of the initiative. This project supports schools to embed a Whole School Approach to wellbeing and mental health, ensuring that every part of the school community plays a role in supporting young people. Bexley is one of just eight boroughs selected to participate, with St Catherine’s Catholic School for Girls in Bexleyheath, as well as SEN School Woodside Academy in Erith taking part. Both schools are working closely with mental health charity Anna Freud and Health Dialogues, helping to strengthen support systems. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

The London Borough of Bexley has procured 10 AV1 telepresence robots to enable children who are absent from school due to medical needs, long-term illness or anxiety, to join lessons remotely from home, hospital, or other setting. Controlling the robot via an app, the child can listen to the teacher, see the board, raise their hand virtually, ask questions, and participate in class discussions with peers. Outstanding work 👏 The London Borough of Bexley is proud to share that its Private Sector Housing Standards and Property Licensing Team (Environmental Health) received a National Safeguarding Adults Board (NSAB) Excellence Award at the end of April in recognition of their ongoing work to safeguard vulnerable adults from abuse and neglect. Every day, our officers work closely with vulnerable residents to address poor housing conditions, safeguarding concerns and support people facing complex challenges. Their work makes a real difference to people’s health, safety and wellbeing. The Council would like to thank all officers within the team for their continued professionalism, dedication and commitment to protecting vulnerable residents across the borough.

Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) have published their full SEND monitoring inspection and found that Bexley’s local area partnership has taken “effective action” to make improvements in all the services and support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) that were identified during our Local Area SEND Inspection in December 2023. The Council would like to thank everyone involved for all their hard work that lead to this excellent outcome.
