Just a little faire isle hat, because they’re such fun little projects!
Design: by me.
Yarn: mostly handspun, a little @jamiesonsofshetland and some handdyed by me @hawartextileinstitute during the last kunstklas.

Picked this project back up today. It’s been singing around in my head for a while, so time to finish it.
Looking forward to quilting this one.

After a lot of drawing, experimenting and looking things are beginning to come together. Still a lot to work out and not sure if this is the way to go, but I’ll keep going for now!
There are definitely some areas of this I really like!

Proces. Finding shapes through lines. Trying to find connections in materials. On a roll here! 😊

Today I experimented with a gelli plate, some acrylic paint, cotton fabric, wet strength paper, chiffon silk and hand made stencils.
I have wanted to try monoprinting for quite a while and as we’re going to delve deeper into this technique next week @hawartextileinstitute during the Kunstklas, I decided to have a go.
Ohh, and what fun! I love the results and seeing how each medium picks up the print. Combining the different printed media really brought depth to the piece. This in combination with some handstitching would look amazing I think. Or maybe printing on coloured or printed fabric, mmmm now there’s a thought!
Having fun experimenting for now!

Working on my little embroidery sampler. Trying out different basic stitches on a nuno felted piece of fabric. I love the density and story these stitches are creating.
I will definitely be using some of these in my final piece, but first more experimenting to do!

It’s been quite a while since I last posted. Lots has happened since, of which getting a new job the biggest is! Since last year I started working @drentsmuseumassen , one of the leading museums in the north of the Netherlands. I love my job, work in a very inspirational place with the most lovely colleagues!
Working in such a creative environment has made me look at my own creative practice and question it. What is it I want to say with my work and how can I incorporate all the techniques collected over the years into a piece of art that has my voice?
To answer these questions I started an artclass @hawartextileinstitute in februari. This has actually brought up more questions for me, but I’m also finding answers and am making again. I am trying to not work towards an outcome, just play for now, which is pretty challenging in a good way!

I was clearing out my studio space and found all these orphan blocks. It’s quite a collection by now!
I didn’t want to throw them out, so I decided to make a miscellaneous quilt with them.
It’s got handpieced bits, blocks made during a quilt-a-long, bits left over from other projects, naturally dyed bits, an appliqué block and blocks from trying different methods of piecing.
It has free form piecing as well as very accurate, using a ruler pieces.
Also it has shapes and methods I really like and some I have found not to be so fond of.
I’m seeing methods I keep coming back to and want to explore further, especially improv piecing and making marks with embroidery and natural pigments.
This quilt (hopefully) will show my quilting journey so far.
I’m thinking of calling it “Lessons learned”.

Moving this conversation along.
I love how this piece “talks” and lets you know what it needs. The “Yes” feeling when it fits and an uncomfortable feeling when it doesn’t.
I also love how strong the white lines look and how they determine the composition. I feel like they want to be taken somewhere.
I also really like the softness of the circular features against the squareness of the rest of the pieces, it sort of balances it.
Still have more talking to do with this piece!

A little while ago I bought @hixsonir book called “Improv quilting, dancing with the wall”. In it she explains her creative process, which basically is looking, listening and feeling, creating her stunning quilts!
It is not so much that I want to create the same kind of quilts, but I love her process, a much more creative and intuitive way of designing. A way that is similar to how I like to create, responding to what the quilt wants.
The whole improv way of working is a way I love, due to its unpredictability, leaving lots of room for creativity, but this also scares me. There is no fixed outcome. It is me and the fabric and my creative responding to what is happening.
It is scary and thrilling at the same time!
I want to pursue this avenue, finding my artistic voice, looking for what suits me, and tackling those inner critics.
This is the beginning of a conversation, let’s see where it will go!

Blocks 2, 3 and 4 of the #evensongquilt by @talesofcloth . Lots more to go and loving the process! ❤️

All these hexies have gotten me going on an EPP rabbithole! I’m so enjoying the handstitching, how the different colours interact with each other and the different patterns the shapes make.
I have been following Jodi @talesofcloth for some time, and when her latest pattern called “Evensong” came out I knew I wanted to make this quilt.
This is my first finished block.
The pattern is very well written with clear instructions. It even has a youtube video to accompany it.
I’m working in small batches on each round so I can see if the colours work for the look and feel of the quilt.
Yes, it is very slow going, but soooo rewarding somehow. Also, it helps me quiet my busy mind and feel calmer. It brings me joy! Hand stitching somehow does that for me!
