Lagos is going to Cannes with five AFRIFF works-in-progress.
On April 28, 2026, the Marché du Film, the official market of the Festival de Cannes in France, revealed the Africa International Film Festival’s 2026 projects.
AFRIFF, founded by Chioma Ude in Lagos in 2010, will present the films on May 16, 2026, from 12:00–1:50 p.m. at Palais K, inside the Palais des Festivals.
Access is for Marché du Film badge holders.
The five projects:
1 - "Family Secrets"
Robert Peters | Nigeria, South Africa | Drama
A disrupted wedding, a drug deal in Umlazi, a Ghana fashion event, pregnancy, fame, and family secrets.
2 - "Insight"
Hakym Reagan | Rwanda | Drama
A former hospital janitor meets a woman seeking medical help to gain sight, leading both into choices shaped by love and sacrifice.
3 - "Prostitute"
Original title: "Ashawo"
Emil Garuba | Nigeria | Crime thriller
A young Nigerian sex worker investigates a sex-trafficking network after her best friend is killed.
4 - "Achalugo"
Obi Emelonye | Nigeria | Historical drama
A prince returns home with his white wife and mixed-race children, forcing conflict with his father, the king, and the history of Achala.
5 - "The Boy and His King"
Valencia Joshua | South Africa, Nigeria | Historical
In apartheid South Africa in 1987, an Indian farm boy forms a bond with the Zulu king and becomes a royal adviser.
