celebrating another successful @shakespeariment.berlin last night with the photos from the last #shakespeariment #asyoulikeit because i'm #goodatsocialmedia. thanks so much to @vincethestampede@thistopian.arc for these fantastic shots. it's a privilege and joy to get to make theater with so many passionate artists. and bring the Bard to the cafe at the fabulous @engelsberlin - the task of the producer *ahem* impresario is to bring people together in one space at one time and i love making it happen. #puttingittogether #berlintheater #shakespeare #theaterinenglishberlin #berlininenglish #sweeponyoufatandgreasycitizens
word no. 10 is (das) #Kopfkino because it's a fun example of a distinctly late 20th century #Germanword #compoundword whose usage is also still kinda in flux. Literally head-cinema, it's basically a movie theater in your mind. But because of how compound words work, it was (is) also used to describe a film that is only for your mind and not your heart, because those are a #binary obviously.
The #dwds newspaper corpus puts its first usage at 1987 and peak usage in 2017, their examples suggest a bias towards the second definition in the 90s and towards the first from 2000 on.
To the #duden! It only lists the first definition, focusing on the incidents, happenings that play out in your imagination, so the movie as opposed to the space. (Which is too bad, cause the best part of the word is imagining your head is actually a cinema, popcorn, sticky floors and all). Even the duden doesn't want to come down on one side or the other of the "is it all in my mind" question, these events are "exclusively or mostly" imagined.
But what would we actually say in English? Kinda depends, "mental image" works sometimes, I guess we don't bother to specify that it's usually a moving image in our mind's eye in English. Or we use the verb, we "visualize" something. There's also an element of thought spirals or pictures you can't get out of your head in some usages of Kopfkino. (Re)playing something out in your mind also works in many contexts.
funfact: there's also a musical titled Kopfkino that has some elements similar to Inside Out so i guess the title makes sense.
unfortunately heady cinema, the more literal translation, only really works for the second definition, which isn't even that common anymore. sigh, the joys of words in translation.

once every ten years I get to be a rockstar in glasses and a dress shirt with the rest of #aspoonfulofdeutschland @barramaceoin@mattigeyer when we perform Disney parodies to open for an actual rockstar like @derschulz_official and i get to find out what parts of a stage i can swing from. thanks to my fellow spoonfuls for not freaking out when i climbed the stage, to Maria for inviting us, and to the crowd for coming on a very quick ride through Germany history with us.

Sunday morning the wonderful @lililand came to @holzmarkt_25 to document #behindthescenes of transforming #salöön into the set for #HeatedConversations at the @berlinscienceweek Science & Culture Forum. word no. 9 is #dingus because it's one of those #englishwords that comes from another West Germanic language AFTER the main split back in the 7th century AND is basically nonexistent in the UK. it's also the first slang for male genitalia that's come up thus far. how on earth did it take me this (sh)long?
to #websters!
it still has the "small object whose common name has been forgotten" as the first definition, while "you're a foolish person but I mean that in a nice way" is the second definition. i'm honestly just waiting for #chongus to be added as the 21st century alternative.
to the #etymology!
websters refuses to take a side in the Dutch v. German controversy, saying it could come from either (#dinges and #Dings are obviously also related without bringing dingus into it.) it also puts the first usage at #1873 so... during the big influx of German-speaking immigrants to the U.S.
but if we look at the Dictionary of South African English, then the Dutch/Afrikaans origin story is equally convincing, even if its first mention is #1898
and of course even though Daddy (British) English doesn't deign to use this word, the #OED still has an entry on it, and they exclude a German origin altogether, opting instead for Dutch/Afrikaans. They also put the earliest evidence back in #1866 in Milwaukee.
my question: does anyone (also looking at u #australianenglish #kiwienglish) actually still use it in either of the webster's meanings? or has it been relegated to the dong pile?

To roar or not to roar, that is the question.
Join us for Drunk Classics: The Lion King on Saturday, October 26th at 8PM @800aberlin
*what is Drunk Classics?*
It’s where we take iconic movies, mix in a bit of improv (and drinks), and let the night unfold in unpredictable ways.

word no. 8 is #notgeil because it's one of those #German combo words that manages to be incredibly evocative and kind of hilarious. while the english equivalents are lascivious which is way too Latin or randy which sounds like something said on 70s television. And it's actually listed in the #duden - their example is of course gendered...because it's men who are notgeil obviously. Women are too proper to be desperately horny. Right. #genderrolesinweridplaces #letstalkaboutsexbaby #germanlearning #wordoftheday #dictionarieskeepingstraightfaces #whatkindofreminder would you suggest for this post dear instagram? Remember to be horny in three days friends and followers!
it's old material night tomorrow at @comedycb so im digging through my google drive and external hard drives for all of my material from 2009/10 - the rest of the lineup has physical notebooks lol @drewportnoyhaha@comedian.chrisdavis@joshwithpowers - and of course i found all the fantastic old @farrfoto s too. check out lil me with eyes that could tolerate contacts. drop by after the euros and laugh about the things we thought were funny in 2009 #obamadildo #berlinenglishevents #2009nostalgia #occupy #hopedieslast #comedyinsin #fabelhaft #comedygonewild #oneofmyweirderjobsinmy20s

word no. 7 is #story because, well... it's a word I use all the time and way too many ways. and now it's probably #instastory that comes up the most. but seriously why are they called stories, where's the narrative in them? sure it's there but it's TINY. i guess they're mostly there to enable the account to be a narrator of experiences because we identify with narrators? and narrators have sold us stuff since forever? p.s. bring back movie trailer narrators!
okok enough of the tangent. To #websters!
definition 1.6 is the news article meaning, dealt with that one a lot in the before times #onceajournalistalwaysajournalist . 1.2a/b are the definitions within fiction and that brings us to story versus plot. ARE THEY BASICALLY THE SAME!? i would argue no, but that's really only because i need them to be different so we can talk about events versus story questions. i.e. the real story is one of deception and betrayal and the plot is the events we use to tell it. but i would love for you to disagree with me. #engagement
and yes English gets story from history, specifically from the Latin historia. because no one wanted to take the old high german gisciht. sorry #geschichte but that's a lot of consonants.
and that's why we also have the definition as the floor of a building (webster's noun 2). or at least it's probably from historia being used to describe the narratives depicted on medieval buildings. and sure you can spell that meaning with an e to distinguish #storey but who does that.
also, the first story is the ground floor. #changemymind

#tbt to #2011 and tiny me (you can tell because my hair is so short) in my year of traveling to play improv games/spending way too many nights at the Kookaburra. 13 some odd years later I'm still playing because I love it, and sure all the other #musicimprov #improv long-forms are great but you can't top games and #impromatch for bringing people together from different languages/countries/generations. all of that to say I'm playing tomorrow in @beinimprov all-stars @improvworksberlin #year14 berlin photos from thomas @farrfoto i think plus #cszportland #keepportlandweird @cszmanchester in the old comedystore
