Remembering your hands… I had a real battle with these photos to get them to where I want them to be but I had to just let go at some point because if I let perfectionism take hold they won’t ever be finished. I’m looking to develop a balance in my photo editing practice between the way a colourist in film thinks and links scenes and shots together through colour and contrast and the direction a photo retoucher takes with precision and fine tuning. I want to bring the best of both approaches into my work and keep experimenting. I was going for a soft, intimate feeling with this set of an anonymous model and I was inspired by my recent rediscovery of Sade’s Love Deluxe album. Music really helps me to find direction with my work and get in the right headspace emotionally. I took a bit of a risk with the direction I took these photos. Do you think it paid off?

Stills from the short fashion film ā€œDiurnaā€ made as part of my collaboration with @dehancer.film . Shot on the GFX100ii with @ola.traska giving classy cool in Lisbon. I was going for a look that was timeless, sophisticated and with a hint of nostalgia. I wanted to keep the camera moving so the short film felt dynamic and that you were whisked in and out of it. This also matched the short window of time before sunset that we had to shoot. To see the whole film, take a look at my portfolio link. #dehancerfilm #gfx100ā…± #fashionfilm #blackandwhitefilm

Last Vestiges with @eu_charry Constructing meaning in my work is something that I think a lot about. The meaning that I attempt to develop through a set of photos and the emotion that I aim to imbue is never confirmed by anyone else, it’s always just what I feel that I have to rely on. I’m curious if anyone who looks at my work feels any slight amount of the emotion that I feel when I’m making it, as well as what I intended to put into it. When I first started shooting I found that I accidentally landed on meaning but I now more consciously attempt to approach my work with ideas and concepts in mind. Whether that comes through I’ll never fully know and I’ve had to make my peace with that. There’s a mystery to this set for me as well as a sense of soft realigning or stability that progresses from the first to the last image. Charry is such a joy to shoot with as she brings such sophistication in the way she manages her emotions on camera. There’s depth to everything I shoot with her and I love what we create together. My hope is that the mid silhouette gives you the freedom to make your own mind up about what’s going on underneath. That’s what I think but I’m always curious to know what you see and feel when you look at a set of images I’ve worked on. If you feel anything when looking at this set, let me know below. I’m always curious…

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking recently about what to do with the frustrations that come when obstacles get in the way of your grand plans. I’ve realised that by leaning into what life throws at me and accepting it as part of the journey, I’m a lot calmer and that comes with an ease of focus. I’m much more productive in calm than when I’m piling the pressure on to perform. I’m finding it’s helping my creativity, especially when knowing what direction to take when I’m editing images such as these. During one of my recent trips to the UK I managed to fit in this impromptu photoshoot with @mimi__yates and I’m pleased I did. We had a very short window where we were both free to be able to create something together and we pulled together these black and white shots. There’s a calm to this set that I love. Despite the time limit, we managed to bring the energy down once we got into the flow of shooting. Mimi brought a beautiful serenity to the shoot that was a joy to photograph and you can feel her soft energy in the images. Sometimes it just works and this time I think it did. Do you agree? Let me know which your favourite is…

When @ola.traska and I went out to shoot a video so that I could test Dehancer’s film emulation plugin on my YouTube channel, we couldn’t resist shooting some stills as the sun was setting across the bay. There’s something unique about every sunset that you witness in Lisbon and you know you won’t see the same performance twice. It gives urgency to the photos that you take as you’re running out of time to capture a one time only light show. Thankfully Olga is such a great and versatile model to work with, so together we created a lot of options in the short amount of time we had to race against the setting sun. Olga looks gorgeous in this final warm light of the day and this made it very hard to choose selects - not a bad problem to have though! 😬 I edited these photos with @dehancer_photo in @photoshop - if you’d like to try Dehancer for yourself then drop me a DM and I’ll help to get you set up. #lisbonphotographer #lisbon #visualartist #dehancer #sunsetphotographs

As it has just become the year of the horse in the Chinese zodiac (and more specifically the fire horse) I thought I’d return to do a re edit of this shot I took of a horse against a firey sunset during covid lockdown a few years ago. This time I used @dehancer_photo for my iPhone to re edit it. I remember standing in the field of horses as the sun was setting across the valley and noticed that this horse stopped its grass eating to stare at the sunset for a couple of minutes. I couldn’t help but think it was admiring the brilliant colours and long shadows cast across the landscape as much as I was. It seemed to be moved by the beauty of the moment. Taking care not to distract it, I moved behind and positioned myself to take this shot and captured its silhouette. It turned out to be my favourite photo I’ve ever taken of an animal. I think they are beautiful creatures. Seeing its reaction to the sunset I noticed our similarities, in that we both pause what we are doing to admire the passing of the day.

Great news that ā€œBlackā€ has been selected for the Crystal Palace International Film Festival 2026 @crystalpalacefilmfestival . The film highlights the risks and rewards of a life and career in boxing. It was an important and poignant film to work on and I’m pleased that it is having the success it is having after winning 2 British Arrows and a 1.4 award in 2025. You can watch the film in full on my website. DP | šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø Model | @ola.traska Location | Lisbon Stills from a fashion film I shot in collaboration with Dehancer. I’m reviewing their Dehancer Pro film emulation plugin for Adobe Premiere and that’s coming out on my Youtube Channel this week. I also had the chance to shoot with @ola.traska who collaborated with me on this and was a joy to work with - especially because we had to get this done in a very narrow time window and we worked well together. I graded the film using Dehancer Pro in Adobe Premiere by first doing a basic pass in Lumetri before choosing my film stock and tweaking it Dehancer. I was pretty impressed considering I shot this on the Fuji GFX100ii. If you’d like to to see how I got to this look you will be able to see the breakdown in my review and I’ll share the link here in my story. If you’ve got any questions about film emulation also feel free to hit me up. If you’d like to try film emulation for yourself and convert your digital photos and video work into film-like versions, you can get 10% off all of Dehancer’s products and plans with the code AVA-10. This also includes their iPhone app available on the App Store which I use to edit my photos on the go on my phone. @dehancer.film @dehancer_photo #dehancer #dehancerfilm #filmemulation #dehancerphoto colourgrading

Back to 2016 with stills from Trendy, the feature film I shot for director Louis Lagayette. We were starting pre production around this time a decade ago and we went on to principal photography for 7 weeks during the Spring, mostly in East London. We then shot pickups for 2 weeks in 2017 with the film premiering later that year at Raindance. Trendy was an immense challenge with a large cast and many locations. I lit around 70 sets over the 7 week period and walked away with pride knowing we had achieved this in such a short amount of time. Being a low budget feature film it wasn’t without its challenges. I was warned before the shoot that I wouldn’t be able to focus solely on cinematography and I quickly found this to be true as I spent a lot of my time answering questions for other departments. I learned how important it was to prioritise and to accept what could realistically be done with the time we had. With the sheer amount of locations it felt like we never stopped moving. The camera didn’t leave my shoulder as most of the film was shot handheld and the long days took a toll on my mind and body. I started to keep track of my sleep and was averaging 3 hours a night because of the workload. By the end of the shoot I was exhausted. There was a near miss in the car on the way to set as well as a point where my body just gave up on me due to fatigue. I decided that I wouldn’t ever put myself through such sleep deprivation ever again. I learned for the first time on this film that some things were more important than filmmaking. My favourite scenes to light were the club scenes and the dog fighting scenes. This was mostly due to the scale of the lighting setups and how I felt I could express myself creatively. The club scenes had hundreds of extras and I loved working around the energy of so many people. I had some great experiences during this shoot, learned a lot and made some lifelong friends, some of whom I still work with. Looking back it’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Trendy. It reminds me how time flies by so quickly and that I should live for the moment when life is so fleeting.

Run Dry | Save Our Soles Dir | @rsandersondir DP | @rwpreisner Talent | @r.freitasb1 , @laura__nmnn Prod Co | AVA Modelis Creative Grade | Jamie Morgan @jamiecolour @no8ldn New commercial work for 2026, shot in Lisbon for @saveoursoleshq We were faced with the challenge to shoot a concept based entirely around rain starting at the end of a long, dry summer. It hadn’t rained for a while in Lisbon so we had to get creative with how we created rain, puddles and mud. We also had to keep the camera protected from waves of water and showers causing any damage. This became a constant juggling act for a shoot that was spread out over quite a long period of the time due to the need for a variety of locations. We got lucky sometimes and once the rain came we made the decision to shoot at the back end of a storm that had travelled across the Atlantic. This allowed us to discover urban waterfalls that had formed because the drainage system couldn’t cope with the sheer amount of water and created some really cool walls of water we could shoot through. I was fortunate as I got to wear a coat and protective clothing for this shoot but António was constantly cold and wet. If it wasn’t raining we made sure to pour freezing cold water on him so there wasn’t a moment he could really escape that 😬 I shot all of the opening effects shots with water in a water tank and there were hours of experiments that weren’t used, we probably could have made 10 commercials of just that. We also shot through liquids and into reflections as a reoccurring motif throughout to give the impression of always being in contact with water. We shot out of vehicles, in forests, on roads, through trails, by rivers, on the beach, in apartments, in a shower, in downpours, in glorious sunshine and in gale force winds so we really covered a lot of bases on this one. Thanks to @rsandersondir for getting me involved, it was a lot of fun to build this over the couple of months we worked on it. Special thanks to @pnkunicorn.model and alimanlim for their help when we needed it šŸ’Ŗ To watch the whole commercial you can see it in my portfolio links :) šŸŽ„
