On October 3, 2025, I had the honor of presiding over my beautiful cousin Set’s elderhood rite of passage ceremony alongside her elder council. It was a monumental occasion marking her 50th birthday.
@wildseed13
The months leading up to this beautiful celebration were filled with love and sisterhood. I am forever thankful to the council for their participation and for showing up when and where needed. I give thanks to my cousin for her love and trust in me during this process. she completed each assignment with grace and intention, and I am so proud of her. Our Mamas are smiling down on us.
I asked my sister and Set’s younger cousin
@actsofliberation to write a message about Set, rites and why they are necessary. You hear me reading some of it in this video.

“The Rite of Eldership is especially important. In African culture, there’s a vital distinction between being “older” and being an elder. An older person has lived longer. But an elder is someone who has lived purposefully. And there is no higher honor than a life of purpose. Set has lived a life of purpose, not just for herself, but for others. She has poured into us, spoken truth when it was needed, and stood firm when it would’ve been easier to fold.
An elder holds the traditions, the memory, the lived wisdom of the people. She becomes a mirror for the past and a guide for the future. Elders are revered alongside newborns, because they stand at the threshold closest to the spirit world from which we come, and to which we return. Set now carries our stories, our struggles, our joy and reflects them back with clarity, with care, and with conviction.
A seed, now in full bloom yet still growing, and in true elder fashion returning to nourish the soil she sprang from so that others may also bloom.”
