Come See Me in the Good Light is available now on @appletv . I feel an immense amount of love and gratitude to Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley for sharing their final year together with us — and now, the world. I also have so much love for everyone who laid the tracks for this journey, starting with Tig and Stef who brought us the idea. To which we politely replied, “No thank you, that sounds like the opposite of fun. Best of luck with your ‘funny’ cancer poetry film.” Thankfully Tig is persistent. “Lucky” is the word we all keep using, which might seem like an ironic word when you’ve lost a loved one. But Jess and I feel like we were given a gift that shifted the way we move through the world. I totally get that the movie has a high barrier of entry because, on face value, it sounds sad and heavy — (which it kinda is! but it’s also not!) — we hope you’ll ignore that barrier and still watch it. Ideally with friends and loved ones when you can find the time ❤️

Ryan White’s warmhearted documentary, #ComeSeeMeInTheGoodLight, about poet Andrea Gibson’s 2024—a year they spent in treatment for ovarian cancer—is partly about what it’s like to grieve a life you may not get to live, but it’s also a hopeful vision of what it takes to enjoy the very life you do have. ✨ For offering a deeply personal vision of how artistry and love can nourish us even in our darkest moments, Come See Me in the Good Light is a #PeabodyWinner. 🏆 Visit PeabodyAwards.com (link in bio) for more #StoriesThatMatter.

i once gave @andreagibson a poem prompt: write an acceptance speech for a fictional award. this is what they wrote. wow. it comforts me to feel the eternal pulse of their wisdom, creativity, and brilliance still moving through the world. but when i look at this video—this gorgeous face, this absolute dreamboat and also the whole entire sea—it breaks my heart to know that part is gone. that i can’t touch their hair, their skin, watch a smile skip across their face like a stone breaking still water. thank god we live in a time of photographs. of videos. of our academy-award nominated documentary, “come see me in the good light”. (streaming on apple tv). i think this may be my favorite of andrea’s poems. this, or maybe “tincture”. what’s your favorite andrea gibson poem?

A lot of people have told me they’re afraid to watch Come See Me in the Good Light. They hear the words ‘poetry’ and ‘cancer’ in the same sentence and can’t quite imagine how the film could be as uplifting and life-affirming as everyone says it is. To anyone still feeling like they’re not ready, let me share three bits of wisdom from Andrea Gibson: 1. “You fear you are not strong enough to do the hardest thing only because you don’t yet know that doing the hardest thing is exactly what will help you know your strength.” 2. “You can’t close yourself off to grief without also closing yourself off to joy.” 3. “Feelings are not the enemy.” If you’re waiting to be ready, consider this your sign. Press play. The film will be the thing that teaches you how to watch the film. I promise. And if you don’t believe me, you can believe Stephen Colbert.

You don’t really understand what it means to be loved by a poet until the poet is gone and you are left with the words, and the love doesn’t feel gone at all. Sometimes I am baffled by what Andrea was able to do with language. As I listen to this, there are lines that feel like they were written not just for the woman I was when Andrea wrote them, but for the woman sitting alone in a too-big bed, pressing play again and again now. Glennon calls Andrea “The Poet Laureate of Heaven.” It’s so true. How they’ve managed to speak to me, to speak to us all, from that unknowable other side. How they seem to thin the veil. Or try to prove there is no veil at all. This video is one of three additional scenes Ryan sent me last week. People will wonder why it didn’t make it into the film. It wasn’t cut because it didn’t matter. It was cut because everything mattered. Our brilliant editor, Berenice Chavez, would beg Ryan to stop returning to Colorado. He’d fly in for b-roll and come back with whole breathing chapters. There isn’t enough space in a feature film to hold every hour of a love like ours. Though heaven knows I’d watch all of it now. If the film is the novel, this scene is the poem. Distilled. A direct route to the heart of it all. Andrea says, “Anyone who has ever said poetry is frivolous has never needed someone to tell them something unspeakably hard, beautifully.” That’s what our documentary is. Something unspeakably hard, told beautifully. If you haven’t watched “Come See Me in the Good Light” yet, I hope you will. Let it rearrange you. I’m so grateful for these six extra minutes with Andrea. And grateful to share them with you now.
