In August, I wrapped up my time in Buffalo as a photojournalist at The Buffalo News (@buffalonews ), an experience that was deeply rewarding. From covering local stories to capturing the city’s beauty, it gave me invaluable insights into the world of visual storytelling. When I wasn’t on assignment, I spent my time making photographs for #everydayaphoto or seeking out ‘wild art’—one of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of the job. The photo team at The Buffalo News was incredibly kind and supportive, and I’m grateful to have learned from photographers whose work is so powerful and beautiful. ( Derek Gee, @libbymarch , & @bsxphoto ) I’m excited to carry these lessons with me as I continue my journey in nonfiction storytelling. Currently, I am in the Washington, DC area working personal projects and prepping for Mountain workshops.

“Falling Forward” — Images from the days before and after the RIT PJ Capstone presentation. The making of the capstone was difficult and rewarding. I had so much fun working with the people at Roc City Roller Derby and growing alongside my classmates in the process. I learned a lot about videography and editing and was able to apply a lot lessons from my internship at Tripod Media to my production strategy. My peers and I showed our capstone at Wegman’s Theater at RIT (slide 1 & 2) and I was able to host a private showing for Roc City at their practice facility (slide 3, 4, & 5). While I shot, produced, and edited my project by myself, editing often felt more collaborative because I was able to work along side my classmates in our lab and get feedback from my professors (slide 6). “Falling Forward” would not be what it was without the help of my peers and professors. Jenn Poggi (@jennpoggi ), Josh Melter (@joshmeltzer ), Linda Moroney (@lkmoroney ), Tom Dooley (@profdooley ), and Kristen McNicholas (@kemcnicholas ).

“Falling Forward” — Pamela Tuety, Adele Long, and Lauren Ayes all found derby at different times. “It’s almost like an addiction or something,” says Tuety. Is it the pseudonyms and alternate personas, the ferocity of a full-contact sport, the community of people? This documentary looks inside the lives of three of the players at the Roc City Roller Derby team and what makes the community unique. Find the full video on my website. /falling-forward #ritpj #ritpjcapstone @rocderby

In addition to giving free haircuts to kids, the event had music, a balloon artist, a toy giveaway, and free food. Hello everyone! My name is Georgia Pressley, a rising fourth year in RIT’s photojournalism program and the current VP and treasurer of @ritnppa . I have been involved with the chapter since my sophomore year and am excited to finally be sharing some work on our Instagram. I’ll be sharing some past work as well as stories of what I am doing as a Revisiting Rochester Narrative fellow for the @democratandchronicle . 1. Des Gilbert, left, and Mike Henry, right, kiss as people dance during a party organized by Juice Box at Photo City Music Hall in Rochester, N.Y. on Sept. 4, 2022. Juice Box is a company that organizes inclusive queer dance parties in Rochester. 2. James Gilmer (left) and Jacqueline Green (right) perform during an Alumni All-Star Ballet Gala at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, N.Y. on July 6, 2022. Gilmer and Green performed “Revelations- Fix Me, Jesus”, a dance choreographed by Alvin Ailey. 3. A motorcyclist begins his ride during a 9/11 Tribute Ride in Rochester, N.Y. on Sept. 10, 2022. This ride marked the 21st anniversary of the ride. The “motorcycle-only ride” is reported by the organizers of Operation Patriot as “one of the largest parade-style rides in New York State”. 4. Kathy De Winds (left) watches as Linda Barber (right) hits a golf ball during an 18-Hole Couple’s Tournament at the Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, N.Y. on July 24, 2022. 5. Judith Gohringer, an abstract painter, stands in her workspace at the Anderson Alley Artist Studios in Rochester, N.Y. on Oct. 11, 2022.
