MIZHINAWE ~ “The Messenger” In the Anishinaabe culture, the hummingbird, known as Nenookaasi, is a powerful symbol representing joy, healing, and the interconnectedness of life. They are seen as messengers from the spirit world, carrying positive energy and reminding people to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Their ability to navigate challenges and their strong, independent spirit are seen as examples of resilience and adaptability, encouraging people to embrace change and find joy in unexpected circumstances. I feel a deep connection with them because I truly think they’ve helped steer my life in a better direction. This bright and vibrant photo of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is a constant reminder of nature’s effortless power of being able to fill our lives with a whole palette of colour when it gets a little dark and dull! #whenboseclicks #rubythroatedhummingbird #hummingbird #nature #wildlife #canon #photography

K’NIGHT’ IN SHINING ARMOUR Almost a year before I could get the chance to return to my favourite place, “under the night sky”. It was a privilege to experience some of Southern Ontario’s finest night skies during our yearly summer retreat at Algonquin Park. The Ojibwe see stars as animate beings with spirits, and their movements reflect the energy and spirituality of the universe. Whenever I get to spend time under the night sky, there’s a spiritual awakening and I feel a sense of calm and protection as it has lead me to a journey of healing, finding myself, forgiving, loving and experiencing peace. This spot with the lake and the tree line in the foreground, worked perfectly not only for some nice photos but also some crazy views of the Milky Way galactic core moving across the horizon. While the night sky lights up my life, my heart sinks seeing how busy it has become up there with the ever increasing artificial objects going around us. It almost looks like they leave a scar as they go by. I counted almost 13 satellite trails in this frame alone. Did you know there are far more stars in the observable universe than there are grains of sand on all the Earth's beaches and deserts combined. Let that sink in and give you some perspective. Here’s to the prince of darkness 🤘🏻🎸 and more of this magnificence soon. #whenboseclicks #nightskyphotography #milkyway #stars #astrophotography #canon #algonquin #algonquinprovincialpark

LEAP OF LOVE ❤️ Recently I had the privilege of seeing a family of Red Foxes close to their den. While the kits were playing nearby, these 2 stole a moment for themselves. It was adorable to see this pair groom each other and play to strengthen their bond. It was also very important for the kits to observe and learn from this behaviour. While they were grooming, I was able to capture this moment where the male decided to jump over the female as she was lying down and looking at him with all her love. It was truly special. #wildlife #nature #natgeoyourshot #canonphotography #fox #whenboseclicks #naturephotography #foxcommunity #natgeo #wildlifephotography

A SHOT IN THE DARK! Well after sunset on a cold winter evening last November, I managed to get this photo of a Snowy Owl flying over a few buffleheads after a good 3 hours of sitting and doing nothing. I took a series of photos from the time it took off to when it disappeared beyond my line of sight and all of them were at an ISO of 16,000 and at 1/320th of a second. I couldn’t see much through the viewfinder at all. Was just going by my instincts. The photos came out really dark and I had to bump up the brightness but I purposely didn’t remove much of the noise to show how the scene was. I was almost hoping it would pounce on the buffet of buffleheads but it sure had other plans 😅 Here’s my favourite from the series. #whenboseclicks #owl #canon #photography #nature

WHEN STYLE MEETS PERFORMANCE My trip to India a couple of months ago had some fun birding experiences. One of them was spotting a pair of White-throated Kingfisher at a local wildlife sanctuary. Often heard before seen, they are a beautiful combination of style and agility. Within a few times that I got to seem them, there were hardly any misses. The nearby waterbody would give them an ample range of meal options. A few frames from the collection. 1: Perched on a rope tossing a fresh catch (grasshopper) before having it whole 2: Fly-by from a lower perch to a higher perch for a better view 3: Taking a break #kingfisher #whenboseclicks #canon #photography #wildlife

Happy Earth Day 🌱🌎☮️ This photo is a constant reminder of how beautiful our home planet, Earth is. It is not only magnificent because of it being the only known place in this whole wide universe to have and sustain life for millions of years, but is also very resilient and adapts and evolves as and when needed. Last year spring was early and the gardens didn’t have much to offer to these little power houses except cherry blossoms or early blooms like these Sicilian Honey Garlic flowers. This Ruby-throated Hummingbird was the first male at this local garden and would frequent this flower. Although not the first choice for them but when you don’t have options you adapt and have what is available. Almost time for them to be back in our gardens as they make their way up North to Canada continuing the journey of migration that has taken place for thousands of years and here’s hoping to see some more of these beauties this summer. #whenboseclicks #rubythroatedhummingbird #canon #photographer #bird

WE LIE HERE SOMEWHERE IN ALL THIS WONDER This was taken during the 2024 milky-way season under really dark skies. Although I love those images which have integrated light data through various filters resulting in stunning Reds, Yellows and Blues, I personally like to keep things as close as possible to what we are able to see with our naked eyes. That was one reason I decided to go with this one. I am yet to experiment with individually collected light data and seeing those colours in my own images. Until then here’s a frame in an attempt to capture the infinite. 2 years since @alynwallace passed and it’s still so difficult to process that he is no more but every time I look up and see a sky full of stars, I know he is there ✨ #milkyway #whenboseclicks #nightsky #astrophoto #canon
