Hi all. As many of you probably have already heard, our miraculous talent Alyn Wallace (Wally) has passed away on 28th of March. There are no words to describe our loss and the pain weβre in. Knowing that heβs had a chance to touch many lives through social media, teach, inspire, and connect with so many souls worldwide puts a consolation smile on all of us.
It is still too early to make any decisions. This unfortunate loss has happened in a foreign country. We believe youβll understand. Itβs hard to comprehend the staggering size of his influence sphere for us boomers, and social media is not exactly a priority at the moment. Any developments regarding his work, equipment, workshops, legacy et cetera will be announced via this account in reasonable time.
We cannot check this account for messages frequently, so if youβd like to contact about his (or your) professional work, suggestions, payments, bookings, ideas or anything else, please contact his mother through [email protected].
Just to avoid any misunderstanding or misinformation, we would like to clarify: his immune system was weakened due to a pre-existing condition, and a simple gall bladder stone infection spread rapidly, causing multiple organ failure, resulting in his untimely demise.
Pauline - Ian WALLACE
π Such an incredible display of green airglow during this night on La Palma in the Canary Islands. The sky was captured with my astro modified camera and I also combined images captured with a hydrogen-alpha filter. This allows you to unveil huge clouds of red glowing hydrogen in space and there are many sources in this image. At the top of the frame are the Flaming Star and Tadpole Nebulae, below them is the California Nebula and right in the middle of the frame is the Heart and Soul Nebulae. Who can name some of the lowest sources of hydrogen alpha in this image?
π You can also spot the open star cluster Pleiades in the upper left and the spiral galaxy Andromeda in the mid-left. Such an incredibly rich area of the night sky that is neglected so much because for whatever reason, most people only want to photograph the core of the Milky Way.
π Two Galaxies, One Comet βοΈ
So pumped to have captured this rare event. After a 4 and a half hour drive away from the light pollution of Istanbul I was finally able to capture my first image of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks. This ball of ice and dust visits Earth once every 71 years. It's still not naked eye visible but most calculations have it becoming naked eye visible by April and it may even be visible during the minutes of totality of the American Solar Eclipse on April 8th.
This image was captured from Nallihan Bird Sanctuary in Turkiye and the trees in the foreground of this image are full of Great Comorants (see cropped images). Sadly, the bird sanctuary visitor centre has at least 10 bright white LED lights illuminating the so-called bird sanctuary throughout the entire night. White LEDs are rather harmful to birds, disrupting their circadian rhythms and migratory patterns so I'm hoping something can be done about this stupidity.
Sadly the comet is now fighting against the light of a growing moon every evening but be ready for when dark evenings return at the beginning of April. As always, get all the latest info from the What's in the Night Sky videos over on my YouTube channel and for more info about photographing comets, check out my book Photographing the Night Sky.
Also don't forget to grab your tickets for the Nightscaper Conference in Utah during September. If you can't make it in person you can get a virtual ticket to watch the presentations and classes via livestream and access them for up to a year after the event. Early-bird prices end soon!
One of these images was captured with a lens that cost me just Β£329 and the other with a lens that cost Β£1299. Can you guess which one is which? π
OK it doesn't help you're viewing them downsized and compressed on Instagram but the point I want to make here is that your viewer never knows what equipment you used to capture a photograph and they probably don't care. Furthermore, the price of a lens doesn't always dictate how well it's going to perform in astrophotography. A perfect example of this is the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 MF which was released for just $300 - it absolutely smokes the Canon 14mm f/2.8 in astrophotography and that lens was released for $1800! π±
I just uploaded a new video to YouTube demonstrating 5 simple checks you can make online to assess how well a lens will perform in astrophotography, before you even buy it!
If you're not happy with any of your lenses right now consider trading it in to @mpbcom and freeing up some funds (for a different lens of course!). It's so quick and easy, you can get an instant quote online for free and then arrange collection from your address on a date that suits you. You also get amazing prices on buying used gear yet it feels like you're buying new as they ship super quickly and everything comes with a 6-month warranty :) Avoid the faff and scams of the used marketplace elsewhere online and shop with peace of mind and professional service with MPB.
PS. The first image was captured with the Samyang 24mm f/1.8 and the second image with the Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM.
