The show takes the form of a mid-career retrospective featuring three renowned series: “Traces” (2015–2017), “Cliffhanger” (2019–2023) and the latest, “Encyclopaedia” (2023–2026), the book of which was shortlisted for the @dboersephotographyfoundation Prize 2026. So… a few things you might (or might not) know 👀 Weronika Gęsicka has been shortlisted for her book ENCYCLOPÆDIA (designed by @_aneta_kowalczyk_ ) for the @dboersephotographyfoundation Prize 2026. The project is currently on view at @thephotographersgallery (until June 7). And here’s the twist - encyclopaedias used to include fake entries. Fiction hidden in plain sight. And that’s exactly where @wgesicka starts. She reworks invented definitions and pairs them with manipulated stock images and AI-generated visuals, gently (or not so gently) messing with what we think is true. Published by @blow_up_press and @jednostkagallery , ENCYCLOPÆDIA is a carefully crafted photobook that plays with perception, credibility, and the fragile nature of knowledge. Introducing the second video interview with Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2026 shortlisted artist Weronika Gęsicka. In an age defined by digital saturation, misinformation, and algorithmically produced images, Gęsicka’s nominated project Encyclopaedia raises a central question: how do we distinguish between what is “real” and what is fabricated, when both circulate with equal authority? With AI-generated content becoming a norm and images being easily altered, the project asks: what happens when even a single error appears in a source we trust? In an era marked by misinformation and manipulation, Encyclopaedia is a humorous reminder that knowledge, once perceived as stable and objective, is now a shifting terrain. It’s a database that dispels our doubts. It’s certainty. However, what if but a single mistake creeps into something certain and indisputable? Doesn’t it put everything else into question, prompting one to disregard it as useless? Can knowledge be objective in a world we find out more about each day? In a world where fake news are a daily occurrence? Fake entries are bits of incorrect information in encyclopaedias, dictionaries and lexicons that have existed ever sincethose sources were first published. These deceitful notes were left by editors as a form of protection against copyright infringement. Some immediately raise suspicion regarding their factuality, while others would probably slip in unnoticedby most. Although these are usually singular cases, there are several publications riddled with such ‘mistakes’. Still, theywould hardly be detected among the tens of thousands of other definitions. ‘Encyclopaedia’ is a project which comprises hundreds of such false entries found in various encyclopedias, dictionariesand lexicons from different places and time periods. For the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2026, Weronika Gęsicka (b. 1984, Włocławek, Poland) is shortlisted for the publication Encyclopaedia, published by BLOW UP PRESS and Jednostka Gallery in November 2024. Encyclopaedia draws on a phenomenon: fake entries intentionally inserted into encyclopaedias, dictionaries and lexicons, originally devised as traps to catch copyright violations or as a playful way for editors to leave their mark on the text. Gęsicka presents several hundred of these fabricated definitions, sourced from historical publications she bought online.
