My essay on invisible images, a term coined by Trevor Paglen in @newinquiry , is in the latest @socresjournal , published by the New School for Social Research. It’s about AI and data mining and surveillance—and other systems that generate all sorts of images about us that we don’t get to see. Read it at the link in my bio and check out the entire issue, guest edited by Paul A. Kottman on the theme of “Photography & Film as Evidence.” Many thanks to Paul for the opportunity to write about a topic that’s obsessed me for years.

For @family_style I wrote about the vindication of David Salle: how he foresaw our media environment, and how he’s embracing AI to comment on a culture where nothing seems new and everything is a kaleidoscopic regurgitation of something else

For @latimes I wrote about @juliastoschekfoundation taking over the historic Variety Arts Theater downtown and packing it with a gobsmacking array of video art—including by the excellent @dougaitkenworkshop who knows all about the forgotten artist history of DTLA. Photos by @carlinstiehl
Today’s my last day at Sotheby’s. Four years ago I joined as an art + literature guy. Now I’m leaving as an art + literature + watches + cars + wine + fashion + gems + sports guy. A little medley of things I worked on along the way
I don’t often share things from work, but @ctk.alessandrini ’s piece on Charles Simonds—an artist l deeply admire—is an incredibly thoughtful piece of writing that I’m proud to have published. I thought I’d have to fight to get it out there, but Simonds’ work is so universally beloved that everyone just agreed, yeah, let’s do that, duh
Not to mention these spectacular portraits by @benedict_evans of a camera-shy figure who was gracious in allowing us into his studio
