The Psychiatry of Evil - Nuremberg (Mini Doc) 🎥
I recently had the incredible privilege of being asked by
@skytv to direct a mini documentary about Douglas Kelley, created to accompany the release of their new film, Nuremberg.
Having previously visited Courtroom 600 for a different project, I was already aware of the immense historical weight the Nuremberg Trials carried and the incredible impact they had in shaping international law. However, I had never encountered the story of Douglas Kelley, the chief psychiatrist who conducted psychological evaluations of the Nazi defendants.
The more I uncovered about Kelley (his methods, his motivations, and his extraordinary proximity to history), the more determined I became to bring his story to life with the depth and respect it deserves.
To do that, I travelled to the United States to interview Jack El-Hai (author of The Nazi and the Psychiatrist) and Doug Kelley (Douglas Kelley’s son) to hear their unique perspective on the life of this extraordinary man. Hearing their accounts offered not only invaluable insight into Kelley’s role at Nuremberg, but also a moving understanding of the man behind the trial.
Back in the UK, I spoke with Professor Peter Lamont of the University of Edinburgh, whose expertise in the history and theory of psychology shed light on an unexpected facet of Kelley’s approach: his integration of stage magic into psychiatric practice. This intersection of disciplines revealed a side of Kelley that was creative, unconventional, and ahead of his time.
And of course, one of the highlights of the entire process was hearing from Rami Malek about his experience portraying Douglas Kelley in Nuremberg.
