Thank you George Lewis, @chayaczernowin7 , and @hans.thomalla for your insights on your own work and feedback for our comp students. Thank you Victoria Chang (@fattery12 ) for coming to talk ekphrasis in my comp seminar, and also for our Public Humanities talk organized by @uhlenna . Thanks @ekmelesvocalensemble for a residency that gave us the out-of-body experience of Stockhausen’s Stimming and premieres of six new grad composer works. And though not pictured, thank you also to Ash Fure and Peter Bussigel @alreadyfuture for leaving us with such a vivid impression of your work.

¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!
The People United Will Never Be Defeated!
Part patchwork, part exquisite corpse, 18 composers were invited by the @nyphilharmonic to make our own orchestral commentaries on Frederic Rzewski’s classic piano variations based on Sergio Ortega’s song. Being together with this cohort and listening to the work take collective shape was an intensely moving experience. The orchestra was all in with @gustavodudamel and in life-affirming renditions of the Eroica symphony. It was a joyous, wordless celebration and protest rolled into one.
At the post-concert toast, Tania León recognized the great Ursula Oppens, who premiered the original in 1976 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. We were honored to contribute to the project, celebrating #usa250, which stemmed from the brilliant conception of @patric_astillo and the NYPhil artistic planning team (Thank you Beth, Henry, and Lauren!).
And thanks to the patrons who helped make the commissions possible, including @5wengfriedmans for Wang Lu’s (pictured here) and @acornarleneld . There are two more performances, tonight and next Tuesday.

What a thrilling night at Lincoln Center! Not only was I there for the historic world premiere of The People United Will Never Be Defeated 2026—but I was honored to have commissioned one of the variations by the brilliant composer @wanglu.composer !
This powerful, inspiring orchestration of Frederic Rzewski’s Theme and 36 piano variations was reimagined by 18 composers from diverse backgrounds. Maestro @gustavodudamel led the @nyphilharmonic in a breathtaking performance—bravi tutti!
It was an unforgettable celebration of new music- truly grateful to have played a small part in it!
“Voices of the Orchard” (10 min.) is a witty and vibrant orchestral suite inspired by ideas from my chamber opera “The Beekeeper”, with libretto by @kelley_rebecca . The work was written in 2022 at Chicago Opera Theater as part of The Vanguard Initiative, under the mentorship of @lidiyaconductor
20 years since graduating from the Central Conservatory of Music. Growing with all these wonderful classmates was a real gift for life. The music excerpt you hear is from a traditional Chinese ensemble work I composed during the time of undergraduate studies, titled "Qing Dan".

Composer and percussionist Bonnie Whiting presents Stages, a performance art piece centering music for singing, speaking, and moving percussionist, developed collaboratively with composer Wang Lu. The project explores and unveils deeply hidden stages of consciousness and moves fluidly between them using sounds, bodily movements, vocalizations, and text recitations, while also employing familiar objects such as pot lids, infant music boxes, radios, solo cups, and thermal sheets.
An Excerpt from my new piece “On What Planet”- inspired by Kenneth Rexroth’s poem of the same title for ensemble of Pipa, Zheng, Erhu, Violin and Piano, premiered by @chinesemusiciansassociationna and guest pianist @ivoryshuai at @clevelandmuseumofart last weekend. Bravo to the wonderful musicians for this truly elegant interpretation. @yangjin_pipa@xiajing1111
