My newest project is called AMERICAN IMMIGRANT and new works by these composers will be presented in formal recitals during the 2027-2028 Season with @michelleacann 🎵 As the son of a Cuban immigrant, I grew up surrounded by the story of my family’s journey to the United States with nothing in their pockets where they built a plumbing business from scratch. That history shaped me not only as a person but as an artist, and it inspired AMERICAN IMMIGRANT: a project commissioning acclaimed composers who have an immigration story of their family to tell through their music. These composers have been asked to write works for cello and piano that tell their own immigrant stories or those of their families. In today’s climate, where immigrants are too often demonized and reduced to headlines, I want to humanize those narratives and give them a voice. Each piece in this recording project is an intimate portrait of migration, resilience, and identity. The aim is to transform deeply personal histories into music that speaks to the shared American experience. Blending my own heritage with the voices of these remarkable composers, American Immigrant is both a musical statement and a call to empathy: a celebration of the humanity that defines what it truly means to belong. This is only part 1 of this project but it has been fully supported by the Avery Fisher Career Grant! This video is music from another great immigrant, Cuban composer: Ernesto Lecuona, Malagueña. My warmest congratulations to @gaellesolal Gaëlle Solal for a performance of remarkable vitality, precision, and tonal richness, and to @clariceassad Clarice Assad, whose writing unfolds a deeply imaginative and characterful sonic world. In her Concerto “O Saci-Pererê”, Assad draws on a mythic figure from Brazilian folklore to shape a work of vivid narrative strength. This third movement, “Dust Devil”, captures that elusive and mischievous spirit through incisive rhythms, sharp contrasts, and a compelling sense of momentum.
