We are proud to announce the World Premiere of Sukundimi Walks Before Me, a documentary six years in the making, premiering at International Oceanian Documentary Film Festival FIFO Tahiti
@fifo.officiel tomorrow, 12 February.
Produced in collaboration with Project Sepik, Sukundimi Walks Before Me centres the mighty Sepik River — the lifeblood of its people — and documents Sepik communities’ resistance to a proposed gold-copper mine in the Sepik region.. At its heart, the film is a story of guardianship, ancestral responsibility, and collective refusal in the face of proposed vast extraction.
The Sepik is one of the world’s great cultural and ecological arteries — long revered for its art, culture, and biodiversity. While its art and stories have travelled the world, Sepik people have too often been spoken about rather than centred as authors of their own narratives. This film works against that history. It is grounded in community trust, cultural authority, friendship and a commitment to storytelling that is relational.
The film is a Brown Sugar Apple Grunt and Walking Fish production and the filmmakers acknowledge with gratitude the support that made this work possible, including from Screen Australia, Pacific Islanders in Communications, Doc Society, The Post Lounge, VicScreen, Random Good, Shark Island Foundation, New Zealand Film Commission, Three Springs Foundation and RNZ.
We also acknowledge the many organisations supporting the Save the Sepik campaign, including Project Sepik, CELCOR, Jubilee Australia, Environmental Defenders Office and Nia Tero.
Above all, we thank the Sepik people - for their trust, their leadership, and generous sharing of their story. This film stands with them.
