The fourth theme in the 2025 ECOLOGY OF LINE exhibition at Singing Apple Press is "DISTURBING SURFACES".
Ingold notes repeatedly that the relationship between line and surface is one of the defining structural principles of line. Traces rely on surfaces. Threads do not. Threads are self-supporting and to some extent constitute surfaces themselves. Threads are often combined to create or support a surface that may itself be composed of threads: a tree sawn into planks; plant and animal fibres shredded and recombined to make paper and textile coverings; metal scaffolding; beams. Surface creation may involve unthreading and rethreading; a disturbance of thread.
Cuts, cracks and creases are "ruptures in the surfaces themselves"; traces or tangible lines that bear witness to the energetic interactions these surfaces have experienced. The disturbed surface reveals itself as a SCORE.. but that would be getting ahead of ourselves!

Reviewing some of my daily drawings from 100 days of lying down outside on the ground, raising funds for MAP, Medical Aid for Palestinians. To lie on the earth and allow my awareness to reach out beyond my imagining to the lives of others whilst surrounded by the minutiae of nature was extraordinary. Connecting to the earth, connecting to others. Gaining support from the earth, giving my heart to those suffering. It was a privilege. For 100 days from 28th May - 5th September, I am dedicating my daily lying down practice as a fundraiser for Medical Aid for Palestinians. During this period of connecting with the earth, I am expressing my care for all those who have died or been injured in this conflict.
