Did you know Kingston upon Hull was founded in the late 1100s? From a small riverside settlement to a vibrant city break 🌊 Bought by Edward I, it grew into a medieval trading powerhouse and in 1642, John Hotham denied King Charles I access to the city- sparking the English Civil War ⚔️By the Georgian era, Hull thrived through building ships like the HMS Bounty and producing figures like William Wilberforce. It became a major fishing and whaling hub, with fleets sailing the North Sea and beyond. After enduring WWII, it rebuilt into a creative, cultural city with landmarks like The Deep. Did you know this about Hull's city centre gardens? Once the heart of Hull’s maritime trade, Queen’s Gardens began life as The Dock in the 1770s, the largest of its kind in Britain. It was later renamed Queen’s Dock following a visit from Queen Victoria in 1854. As trade evolved, the dock became obsolete. A special committee was formed, and it was decided the dock would be filled in and transformed into a public park. Queen’s Gardens officially opened in September 1935. Today, its sunken lawns and fountains sit where ships once docked. The garden’s ongoing redevelopment pays homage to its maritime past while introducing fresh landscaping and new art installations.
