Thank you to everyone who has been part of our story over our first 25 years. Enjoy some of the moments, stories and milestones we shared on our journey together from empty fields to the vibrant and inspirational living landscape you see today. We look forward to the next 25 years as the Nation’s year-round place to remember, continuing to commemorate the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, Emergency Services and civilian organisations.

A place to talk, connect and create things – that’s the Men’s Shed at Galanos House, one of our care homes for the Armed Forces community. The shed is run by volunteers and brings people together through activities like woodwork, restoration of furniture and more. We’ve partnered with Men’s Sheds to highlight Sheds as welcoming spaces for the Armed Forces community. Our Care Homes provide just the setting to do that – bringing together residents with the local community. Those involved tell us how its helped to boost mental wellbeing, reduce loneliness and combat isolation. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

“I was sat in the careers library and saw nursing in the military and thought ‘that looks alright!’” After qualifying as an RAF Nurse in 2005, Bex Preece’s first posting was to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court where she came face to face with the raw reality of the Iraq War. “I remember the first person I looked after was a young soldier who had lost his leg on his first ever deployment. “I was only 21 at the time, so seeing someone so young without a limb was quite shocking; he also had lots of other wounds from shrapnel injuries.” Bex cared for service personnel with a range of life-changing conditions, and was later deployed to Kuwait where she worked alongside Army nurses, doctors and Combat Medical Technicians to look after those who were deployed on Operation TELIC who needed to be flown back to the UK for treatment. Please join us in honouring the extraordinary service and sacrifice of the British Armed Forces and their families during operations in Iraq. #InternationalNursesDay

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I did it!” Yesterday, Tori ran the Bristol Half Marathon with her heart. As the proud daughter of British Army veteran and dedicated Poppy Appeal volunteer Lt Col Peter Errington Townsend MBE, she knew that when she lost him in 2023, she wanted to do something extraordinary in his memory. “Dad had a long and distinguished career in the Army and when he retired he organised the Poppy Appeal every year in his area, helping raise thousands of pounds for veterans and their families”, she told us proudly. A call to service runs in the family, as Tori’s daughter, Emma, passed out from the Royal Navy last year. “Watching her passing out with all of her fellow cadets was one of the proudest days of my life”, she said. “I really wanted to do something positive whilst Emma was away, so as soon as she passed out I decided to commit myself to the half marathon”, Tori said. “I knew that I was going to struggle enormously with this run emotionally and physically, but I had a picture of Dad and Emma with me to make sure I completed it.” Thank you Tori for your determination to support today’s Armed Forces community, in your Dad’s memory. You smashed it 👏🏅

Nima Suchak’s grandfather - Vallabhdas Suchak - was one of 2.5 million South Asian soldiers who served during the Second World War, but she didn’t uncover his incredible story until recently - thirty years after he passed away. “I feel a sense of sadness about discovering my grandfathers service now, sadness that his service wasn’t recognised in his own lifetime and that I never had the chance to ask him about it.” Vallabhdas was born in India in 1924 and moved to Uganda when he was young, before serving in Burma and North Africa alongside the Allies in the Second World War. In 1972 he moved to the UK as a refugee, fleeing the genocide in Uganda. He settled in Shepherd’s Bush in London and worked as a security guard before passing away in 1989. To highlight stories like Vallabhdas', we have partnered with @britishfuture to create the Forgotten Army Touring Exhibition, raising awareness of a legacy too often forgotten and encourgaing South Asian families to share stories of family members who served. Featuring a bronze sculpture created by leading artist @mahtabhussain , the exhibition is currently on display at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery. Search 'Forgotten Army Touring Exhibition' on the RBL website to find out more. #Remembrance #ForgottenArmy

On the 81st anniversary of VE Day we're proud to announce funding for Second World War veterans to travel to commemorations in Europe this year — from the beaches of Normandy to the battlefields of Arnhem. Working with the @royalbritishlegion in collaboration with charities like @sont1944 and @taxicharity we're ensuring those who secured our freedoms can return to the places that shaped our history. #VEDay81 #veterans #wewillrememberthem

#OnThisDay 81 years ago, millions in the Allied nations celebrated the end of the Second World War in Europe. Whilst fighting continued in the Far East until August, Victory in Europe Day was a significant moment in bringing an end to the global conflict. Up and down the country people breathed a sigh of relief and took to the streets to celebrate. Today we pay tribute to the Second World War generation, whose service and sacrifice protected the freedoms we enjoy today.
