“The legacy of the Windrush is evident in our football team as it is in our society,” says a joint letter in The Guardian today from legendary Black footballers, including Viv Anderson, Brendon Batson, Paul Canoville and Clyde Best, ahead of Windrush Day this Saturday.
The letter says Euro 2028, hosted in UK & Ireland, is an ideal moment to celebrate the Black contribution to football in a major way. That year marks 50 years since Viv Anderson became England’s first Black senior international player; 30 years since Hope Powell became the Lionesses’ first Black manager; and 80 years since the Windrush arrived in the UK.
Ten years ago today, terrorists tried to divide us. They failed.
London was shocked but it didn’t grind to a halt. That evening, thousands of people walked home. But we were not divided - we walked together.
Today, on Tuesday 7 July, we’re asking people to walk together once again - to get off the bus, train or tube one stop early and walk, in a quiet moment of unity and remembrance of those who lost their lives n. he 7/7 bombings.

On 7 July 2005, terrorists detonated four bombs across London. 52 people lost lives and over 770 were injured. The victims were all of us – young and old, black and white, different faiths and none.
