NEW EPISODE: “Novels, sculptures, a beautiful leaf — ideally, everything is a picture of a bigger picture, and reveals shadows of other things. But songs have such a much longer life because of this great mystery within them. A song’s not vague because the songwriter *can’t* say what it’s about. These are things that cost people time, sweat, tears and blood, in some cases. And in the context of that, it’s just important to take stock. Progress can be made again, and it can be lost again. There’s real people behind those gains, and there’s nothing grandiose about it; it was just people making informed decisions based on their own conscience, and not deciding to sleep on it. I usually plan my Record Store Day itinerary weeks in advance — sometimes even traveling across state lines — but this year, I admit, it snuck up on me a bit. Thus, I went through most of a normal Saturday, figuring I’d sit this one out. Yet, I’m thrilled to report I made it to @rediscover_records in nearby Elgin just under the wire, when my brilliant and beautiful wife voiced how silly it would be if I didn’t visit at least one shop on my favorite day of the year.Had to snag @thejayhawksofficial’s Dutch sessions from 1997-2000. Incredible performances from an all-time favorite band of mine.Thanks to shop owner @rwagnerful for all he does! I’ve known him long enough to remember when his “store” was just the backroom of an antique shop. So glad to see Rediscover’s growth and how it’s become such a part of the Fox Valley arts community. #recordstoreday #rediscoverrecords #thejayhawks #vinylemergency

“For a long time, (Bob Dylan) has been at the confluence of folk, protest music, artistic integrity, poetry and surrealism. And, in some strange way, I think that’s a really big part of what we like to do with this project: Trying to find a midpoint between saying something artistically valid and saying it in a way that is also kind of grounded and in touch with the roots of the music we all started playing.”This week on @vinylemergency — while currently atop the Billboard UK Jazz & Blues Charts — instrumental trio Mammal Hands discusses their wide swath of influences, and why their latest album ‘Circadia’ feels like a new chapter for a band already six records in.
