A BC-based surgical innovation is reducing ovarian cancer risk by nearly 80 percent, according to new groundbreaking research funded by donors like you. Pioneered at VGH, opportunistic salpingectomy (OS) involves proactively removing a person’s fallopian tubes when they are already undergoing a routine gynecological surgery. In a study of more than 85,000 people between 2008 and 2020, researchers found that patients who received OS were 78 percent less likely to develop serious ovarian cancer. On the heels of this study, BC recently became the first jurisdiction in the world to offer OS to routine procedures performed by gynecologic, general, and urologic surgeons, benefiting patients in BC first.
