Our collaboration with @archwk , @park_lane_stables - Riding for the Disabled Association’s (RDA), has been shortlisted for RIBA London (South West) Awards!
In the words of Architecture:WK:
“The building footprint originally housed fire station horses. In the 1980s part of the original footprint was used as a flat.
The new building returns the space to ancillary use for the stables, housing a community room, therapy room and, of course, the much loved Cuddle Horse!
The stalls got a facelift as well with stylish new ones by Monarch Equestrian.”

As mentioned in our previous post, Park Lane Stables are the home of the Riding for the Disabled Association’s (RDA) horses. These horses benefit the lives of over 20,000 disabled children and adults. With fun activities like riding and carriage driving, they provide therapy, fitness, skills development and opportunities for achievement – all supported by 13,000 amazing volunteers and qualified coaches at over 400 RDA centres all over the UK.
RDA is an inclusive and diverse organisation. They welcome clients with physical and learning disabilities and autism, and there are no age restrictions. Through their network of member groups, RDA is at work in every corner of the UK (not just Teddington!), in cities and remote rural areas, bringing the therapy, achievement and fun of horses to as many people as they can.

Finished Project!
Some finished photos of our neighbouring wrap-around extensions in #Farncombe, in collaboration with the team at @delvearchitects
We utilised the use of timber in both extensions, forming the external walls in timber studs with cladding by @cab.workshop and brick and stud cavity walls. This design choice allowed us to reduce the total weight of steel used in the extensions, reducing overall steelwork costs and embodied carbon.
We are delighted with the finished product.

We were appointed by the fantastic people at SPUD, an arts and education charity that creates opportunities for people to engage with art, architecture, design, and the environment, to help design their new The Living Room project.
In their own words: “Our ultimate aim is to create a dedicated space to enable creative collaborations with our diverse community, particularly older people and those living with dementia and their families/carers. The Living Room will be a modest structure built on the site of an old water tower in the grounds of spudWORKS, creating a private, warm, and secure environment. We it to be a source of happiness and enjoyment, that makes communities feel valued, part of something that enriches their world.”
The entire superstructure was designed in timber, making it cost effective and sustainable. This was achieved with close collaboration with both the contractor and architect.
Here are some shots of the project during its constriction. The Living Room is almost complete and ready to be opened in mid-October. Keep an eye out for some finished photos very soon!

The foundations have been laid and the steelwork has been installed at our coal hole conversion in #StokeNewington.
Coal holes can be found beneath many Victorian houses in London. These are often accessed through a door underneath the staircase at ground floor level and, as the name suggests, is where coal was stored before gas and electricity was readily available.
Coal holes are often untouched, damp, and cold but do provide an excellent opportunity to gain some usable space within the home. Once waterproofed and finished, our clients plan on using the newly converted coal hole as a utility and storage area.

Some progress shots from our loft and pod conversion, and side infill extension in #Walthamstow. The property is an end of terrace dwelling with a back garden that tapers towards the rear of the house, allowing the client to take advantage of the extra floor space available for the side infill extension.
The client previously had renovation works undertaken with steelwork and foundations already in place as part of these works. Following a construction site visit, we were able to justify integrating some of the existing structure into our proposed design, reducing site waste and saving money on materials.

Outdoor space in London is like gold dust. Not only has the client increased the overall habitable space at their property by converting the loft, but they have also gained some private outdoor space. The good news is the works are due to be finished in mid-August just in time to enjoy the last of the summer sun!
