Following the expiry of a property lease held by a much loved local charity a project brief was born. The core requirement was to re-purpose the ancillary ground floor flat, developed in the 1980s, to provide welcoming visitor facilities to include a community space with ‘cuddle horse’ stall, a private consultation room and an accessible WC within a thermally upgraded and serviced space.
Park Lane Stables RDA provides horse riding opportunities for disabled children and adults. With a local fundraising endeavour going national, the Local Council locally spot listed the premises, the freehold was purchased, with the proprietor and charity team working together. The premises comprised a dilapidated collection of small-scale structures, featuring both stables and service accommodation for staff and volunteers, and including ancillary residential space and elements of historic fabric dating back to its use as an 1830s fire station with attendant stabling. The redevelopment project has now provided upgraded stabling, staff facilities and community spaces with stabling for nine horses.

It’s a reaffirmation that the client - in this case @park_lane_stables - are the driver of all good architectural work. Architecture is about creating shelter and place to serve its user’s needs, and if it can be done with beauty and elegance and some good detailing intended for durability and sustainability, then it has achieved its purpose.

These are some ideas for the GP clinic on the site of the old Teddington Police Station. A site that could have genuinely affordable housing under a Community Land Trust arrangement, a co-working cafe on site and a cinemas well as the surgery. The proposal creates a sense of community - is of it and belongs to it - with multi generational spaces and uses that can accommodate local needs for social interaction.
At the moment the design includes for a 5 consultation room surgery, but could accommodate one with 9 consultation rooms.

Most of the units proposed for our latest Social Initiatives Project, The Precinct, are intended to be accessible, with air source heat pumps and solar panels. The courtyard units have either gardens or terraces and we imagine green fingered 🪴 residents.

When designing new homes and for communities while the world around us seems to be on fire, we are not pretending that only we matter. We’re designing for an idea of a better, more compassionate future and building hope that can ripple out around us.
The community we’re designing for is here, in our locality, where we also live and work. It’s a mix of older and younger professionals that can integrate and provide a mutual support That can imbed the arts and culture through shared activities; films, screenings, performances and connection with the wider community.
We’ve visualised the units as pared down and envisage that owners will either be involved in a self-build or self-finish development to imprint on their home. Ideally, we would like all of the units to be Affordable in perpetuity to ensure that young professionals and older residents are not priced out of the area.
