TRUly BAD is a collective of artists brought together by sheer luck but held together by their mutual passion and desire to grow as artists and humans. Individually, each poet has an extensive resume, bringing expertise to the collective ranging from co-hosting one of Boston’s most groundbreaking open mics for 14 years and counting, to featuring on prestigious platforms such as Button Poetry and Voices In Power as well as being a top 3 finalist in multiple national slam competitions, to having works published in Molecule Mag, The Trident Poetry Collective Anthologies, and Shooting Stars At Sky–The Poetry of Play.

Essmaa doesn’t just host, she curates our emotional journey through the evening and makes all our poets feel safe and supported to express themselves. “Essmaa Litim is an award-winning spoken word poet, cultural curator, and author whose work sits at the intersection of storytelling, social equity, and community building. A first-generation Afro-Arab American, she has performed across New England and collaborated with institutions and brands including Puma, Moderna, WGBH, Tufts University, the Boston Book Festival, City Winery’s Voices in Power, and Poetry Me Please. In recognition of her artistic excellence and community impact, she was named Spoken Word Artist of the Year by the Boston Music Awards (2025) and received the Extraordinary Woman Award from the Boston Mayor’s Office for Women’s Advancement (2023). A published writer, Essmaa is the author of the memoir Speechless (2021), chronicling her family’s immigration story and her mother’s advocacy for her autistic, nonspeaking son. Artist Towana Wright first displayed her artwork @verbflowvision back in February and we are thrilled to close out the season with her latest - “wearable art.” Peruse her offerings during our final 2025 show - Nov. 22nd at our new location @spencerloftsgallery . Links to register in the bio! About the Artist Towana Wright, St. Elmos’s Daughter, resides in Chelsea, MA. She is a self-taught Free-Style Urban Folk Artist who discovered her artistic gifts during the pandemic. She uses bold colors in her work and loves working with acrylic, oil, pastels, and fabric. Towana enjoys making collages and mini quilts. Her influences include Clementine Hunter, Jacob Lawrence, and Romare Bearden. Towana has recently begun making wearable art featuring her one of kind free style artwork. In a world filled with mass produced apparel, her wearables stand out because they are not replicated. Towana can often be found at the Starbucks Community Store in Chelsea sketching and painting. Four of her works are currently on display there from her series “The Struggle Continues” . Towana had her first solo exhibition at Chelsea City Hall’s Black History 2025 Celebration, and she was also invited by Ms. Daneeca Thurston-Chavez, Director of the Lynn Museum and Arts Center to display her work for the museums Douglass Family’s Impact in Lynn, a conversation with author Kenneth B.
