It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Dr Cate Consandine, Senior Lecturer, artist, colleague, friend.
Cate’s contribution across the Faculty touched all of our VCA Art programs. Cate was fiercely passionate, devoted to her students and ambitious for the programs that she fully immersed herself in: Sculpture and Spatial Practice followed by Honours.
Prior to commencing at VCA Art in 2013, her practice was well known. Foremost a sculptor she produced performance-based works, video and sculpture, registering moments bodies, matter and objects collided and spun. Startling artworks such as Candy Cane and Cold Cut, Eye-Stalk, 2006 cemented her reputation. More recent work such as RINGER (2024) at Buxton Contemporary continued her acclaim.
Cate generously brought her research, passion and networks to her lecturing at VCA Art. Her intellectual curiosity and rigour commanded the floor during critiques, always cleverly folding in student perspectives. She instinctively knew how to bring each student’s artwork to a point of clarity and it was common to hear her riotous laughter echoing through the passageways as she spoke with students, delighting in their work. Since her passing, alumni have written to us of her kindness, grace and sage presence.
Cate was integral to the life and community of VCA Art and the Faculty, and her loss is deeply felt.
Our thoughts and condolences are with her close friends and her family.

Thanks Memo Review for publishing some reviews of work from our 2024 graduate exhibition.
“Despite the “Do not ingest” label, I can’t help but feel tempted; the feral legacy is alive and kicking.” - Thomas Stoddard
“Johnston, Dymke and Benjamin’s works borrow from a curiously devotional mode in their creation. While not necessarily spiritual in their motives, each work has a mystic property beyond the limits of their expression.” - Hugh Magnus
