📅 New exhibition alert! 📅   The Architecture Drawing Prize 2022 winners and virtual retrospective 8 February – 7 May, 2023   Part of the @architecturedrawingprize annual programme sees the category winners’ drawings exhibited at the @soanemuseum . This year the exhibition is accompanied by a virtual retrospective in the Vault of Contemporary Art (VCA) showcasing previous winners (2017-2021), which will also be projected in the museum’s Foyle Space. Both the exhibited hand-drawn, digital and hybrid works in the museum’s galleries and the virtual retrospective celebrate how communicating ideas are at the heart of what makes a strong architectural drawing – be it purely conceptual or relating to a project intended to be built.   Designed by @make_architects , the VCA platform utilises the placemaking skills of architects while addressing the desire of curators to offer richer content to viewers. Arranged around ten themes, ranging from Light, Space, Shade to This Crowded City and Dystopian Visions, the virtual retrospective embraces digital architecture’s ability to now complement the experience of viewing art in person. Room 11 | Ruins Reimagined   The final room in the @architecturedrawingprize  virtual exhibition 'The Architecture Drawing Prize: 5 Year Retrospective', curated by the @soanemuseum 's Curator of Exhibitions, Louise Stewart. Thank you to @make_architects , the Soane, @worldarchfest and all the entrants over the past five years for making this digital retrospective possible.   The idea of the ruin has powerful associations with great civilisations of the past, the enduring nature of architecture and, conversely, its fragility. The four works in this room vary from a contemporary interpretation of the Biblical story of the Tower of Babel to an architect's witty reimagining of a modernist building. Room 10 | Understanding the City Part of the @architecturedrawingprize virtual exhibition 'The Architecture Drawing Prize: 5 Year Retrospective', curated by the @soanemuseum 's Curator of Exhibitions, Louise Stewart. Each of the three works in this room display different drawing techniques to make sense of our urban environment. The first is a series of quick sketches made in situ that function to preserve the individual’s impression of Hong Kong and its fast-disappearing shopfronts. Room 9 profiles the work of Jerome Ng, the inaugural winner of the 2017 Prize. A talented visual communicator from Singapore, Ng has twice won the hybrid category with his highly skilled and imaginative drawings. Both artworks in this room consider ways of repurposing existing buildings: the first providing hospice care for the terminally ill in Peckham, and the second preserving an iconic Singapore building as a residential project. Ng employs a range of research methods and drawing techniques, from technical infrastructure images to perspective views of everyday life, to create proposals that are dynamic and appealing. Embroidery has traditionally been associated with women and amateur practice in the West, while architectural drawing using pencil, pen or computer software has been attributed to professional practice involving men. German architect, Anna Heringer, turns all this on its head with an embroidered village masterplan created in collaboration with Bangladeshi women. Flood-responsive landscape performance, 2021 by @filippa__d_arch at @bartlettarchucl Synthesis of casted physical model 100x100x500mm, digitalised in Autodesk ReCap, modelled in Rhino 3D, post-production in Photoshop 8818 x 11022 pixels Dafni’s project responds to the climate emergency in Central London and proposes the activation of the ‘Deep Ground’ as a responsive flood-defence landscape. The Strata is injected with a series of hydro-membranes, which expand to absorb the tidal and storm surges protecting the human and non-human infrastructure from flooding.
