Due to its unusual construction, #DORutor is a so-called uniwidth family. The term uniwidth describes typefamilies in which the horizontal extension of each glyph remains exactly the same across all weights. Since the imaginary drill bit defines not only the whitespace but also the letter spacing, Rutor does not expand horizontally when set in Bold and Black weights. This feature makes the family well suited for the variable use in fixed formats and confined spaces.

Rutor Stone
#DORutor is a Type Family inspired by the chiseled Art-Nouveau inscriptions of Darmstadt’s
Mathildenhöhe as well as the precision and aesthetics of a CNC milling machine. Like a variety of Art-Nouveau typefaces, Rutor uses a rectangle as its basic form. An imaginary, freely controllable drill then cuts out the whitespace from the outside in. To achieve uniform word images, the letters are each given a drill radius as left and right side bearing, which in turn results in a full drill diameter as letter-spacing.

I have tested 120 variable fonts from adobe and google. Only 15 out of 120 worked perfectly with the native 3D possibilities for text in After Effects (C4D + advanced 3D renderer). All other fonts worked well as 2D, but with 3D there were almost always deformations.
Here are my top 6 as a small animation.

The Secret Type Garden is a generative typographic poem conceived by artist duo @pointer_studio as a reaction to the typeface collection and visual language of type designer @celinehurka , accompanied by an immersive generative soundscape created by @torvs .
This work is a part of @variablelab , an ongoing exchange between Céline Hurka and Studio Pointer* on the current state of variable typography and type design.
The Secret Type Garden is an exploration of the relationship between typographic voice, storytelling, and the nature of digital font formats. Typefaces are simultaneously pieces of fiction and tools. They are small entities of software – perhaps the most consumed pieces of digital technology of all time. Here they transcend their utilitarian nature, escaping their day jobs in the misty wilderness.

It's Variable Time!
We are thrilled to announce our major current project - Variable Time, an open-source design tool that allows working with variable type in motion.
Together with @celinehurka , we have been working on this tool for the past year and will finally release it this summer.
The inspiration behind Variable Time came from our very own need for a simple design tool that could create detailed animations using variable fonts. Thanks to the support of @stimuleringsfonds , we could turn the idea into an easy-to-use and free web application.
The core element of Variable Time is the timeline which is accompanied by a range of more and less conventional tools for working with variable fonts. This toolkit will be growing along with our expanding research for Variable Lab. We want this tool to be a place for sharing our findings and experiments. By making the tool open-source we are inviting practitioners of different fields to join our hands-on research, thinking together about how variable fonts could enrich the ways in which we communicate.
In the coming weeks, we will be sharing more information about Variable Time's functionality on our Instagram account @variablelab
