In our research we are combining various tools for sound and speech analysis to choreograph a body of text, imagining a typographic voice that speaks in different tones and accents. Typeface — Tonka by @celinehurka and @huwdwill Supported by @stimuleringsfonds

🔊 Can typography capture a moment in time, like photography, film or sound recording? Building up on our long-standing interest in performed words, the prosodic expression and computational typography, our current research delves into translating inherent qualities of speech through variable text. Within this project, we look at the human voice as a design tool and an instrument which allows to inject these extra layers of meaning back into writing. Typeface — Tonka by @celinehurka @huwdwill This project is made possible thanks to @stimuleringsfonds 🤍

🔉🌊 For a while now we are thinking about the relationship between sound and typographic expression. Using Variable Time as a core framework, we are experimenting with additional controls, thinking about how sound can be used as an intuitive, yet flexible design instrument. Thanks to @stimuleringsfonds once again, we will be able to dive deeper into this through conducting a series of experiments with (variable) typography, sound, and other kinds of automated inputs. Will be posting more on that! It’s great to be able to work with Tonka - a super flexible three-axis variable font by @celinehurka and @huwdwill 🙏❤️

The Sound of Text was a workshop we conducted several weeks ago for the wonderful students of @klassekartak at @dieangewandte It revolved around the relationship between voice and typography, and verbal and non-verbal modes of expression. Throughout the workshop, students analysed speech patterns, examined individual voice traits, and developed fictional characters by combining sound, text, and typography. We had the pleasure of introducing Variable Time and offering a glimpse into some new work-in-progress functionality. Thank you for thinking along and providing such an amazing testing ground for us 💙 Many thanks to @klassekartak and @oliver.kartak for the invitation and to @glyphsapp for the licenses 🌹

Visitors of the Secret Type Garden are invited to harvest specimens that they can bring home to their local hard drives. Specimens may then inhabit any new non-commercial project.* *In case you decide to use a specimen from the garden for your work, please credit Studio Pointer* and Céline Hurka Visit the Secret Type Garden via the link in bio 👾

The Secret Type Garden can be visited online now! 🗝️ Link in Bio (desktop only). The Secret Type Garden is a generative typographic poem conceived by artist duo @pointer_studio as a reaction to the typeface collection and visual language of type designer @celinehurka , accompanied by an immersive generative soundscape created by @torvs . This work is a part of @variablelab , an ongoing exchange between Céline Hurka and Studio Pointer* on the current state of variable typography and type design. The Secret Type Garden is an exploration of the relationship between typographic voice, storytelling, and the nature of digital font formats. Typefaces are simultaneously pieces of fiction and tools. They are small entities of software – perhaps the most consumed pieces of digital technology of all time. Here they transcend their utilitarian nature, escaping their day jobs in the misty wilderness. Visit the garden: https://thesecrettype.garden The project is generously supported by @stimuleringsfonds #TheNiceGallery
