“I painted this piece on the precipice of Mardi Gras season in New Orleans, thinking about how to balance revelry against chaos, genocide, the rising tide of fascism, thinking about looking out into the world and seeing it in flames. In the past l’ve been willing to accept the magic of carnival season as some sort of fulcrum against the evils of the world, but I don’t know if there is enough magic in the world now to tip the scales. Even so we must persevere, find escape from the flames, find our way through the chaos & in that spirit I made this painting.” - @langstonallston

“Marked by signature variations of the color red, this fiery selection celebrates the multifaceted wit and wisdoms located within our shared ancestries - while simultaneously affirming the ever-boiling blood of intergenerational rage. With careful attention to wordplay, symbolism, and expression - her work centralizes the Black gaze. In upholding an unapologetic approach to “If you know, you know” - Jewel invites viewers toward self-reflection, critical discourse, and reimagination of embodied liberation.”

Proudly inviting yall to our upcoming exhibition. We’re presenting a collection of images from @zaymonae ’s Photo Walk initiative, purposed to instill preservation and celebration of the communities and culture of South LA.
The exhibition is raising funds to empower and expand future Photo Walk gatherings and programming.
60 artists will be exhibiting 16x20 works that capture the people, places and life of Slauson, Inglewood and Crenshaw, with portions of art sales directly supporting future Photo Walks.
Join us this Saturday 5-9pm for the opening at RIOS Design Collective, 3101 Exposition Place. You may also visit from Jan 19th - 23rd from 9-5pm. As a fundraiser, we do have a suggested donation of $15 to support the cause.
