My mission as an artist is to consistently produce vibrant, thought-provoking creations that captivate the senses, and connect people with my culture. My distinct creations celebrate beauty, excellence, pop culture, and diversity, but at the core they’re all inspired by, and celebrate the Black experience. Art is such a powerful vessel and I love how it empowers and connects us all.

Naturally, I’m driven to be one of the greatest artists in history, but my biggest goals align with fostering community. I hope to continue teaching, leading, and inspiring young creators. Especially those who look just like me. Art was never supposed to be an option for me; especially in the traditionally exclusive art world. Through art, I’ve been fortunate to see my wildest dreams come to life. I want young kids to know that our voice is powerful, it matters, and every single dream is possible.

Miles Davis didn’t just embody cool. He redefined it.
As a lifelong fan, painting my third portrait of him during his centennial year felt especially meaningful. I wanted this piece to carry that unmistakable Miles energy — layered in deep blues and blacks, calm but commanding, then surrounded by bursts of color that echo the brilliance, risk, and electricity of his sound.

“What Is Love” is a 60×60” acrylic on wood painting — one of only two works I’ve ever made at this scale — and this weekend, she will be featured in the Cannibal Flower group show at @gabbagallery 🔥
This piece has lived in a few special spaces, from TV/film sets and private presentations to Art Basel in Miami, but this is the first time she’s being shared with the LA public in a gallery setting. My city. That makes this moment feel especially meaningful.✨️

Spring 2022- I had an 8th grade class and needed something to carry us to the end of the year. I received a mailer from an art sale company and flipped through it. I saw @vakseen and knew right away that the kids would connect with his “collage influenced painting style” and what he represented 😍Students made 5 shapes on watercolor paper, following a (loose) checklist of each shapes category that had to be cropped or off-centered in some way. For example: favorite cartoon character, an abstract pattern, a part of the face. It was awesome because they could utilize the different topics and mediums we had covered throughout the year, as well as take advantage of that end-of-the-semester creative confidence that often makes an appearance.
When it comes to many pop culture designs that the kids recognize and enjoy, there is often an immediate sense of not being able to do it without tracing. Spoiler alert: they can.. and it’s far better for developing creative autonomy than copying someone else’s work is.
