This one goes out to you, Mamadou! (no hablas inglés y yo no hablo sérère, pero nosotros ya sabemos la historia). Without you and your store all this beauty would not exist. The way in which you arranged the mantas each day spoke of so much taste and dedication for what you did. Our friendship and my visits to the park brightened my days. We went through this terrible police raid together. You lost ten mantas that day. For me it was the first police raid ever. For you it was one out of innumerous.
We had these peaceful mornings under “your” palm tree, watching the school children run around. On other days we practiced catalan, which we both were eager to learn at the time; you were even obliged to speak it in order to obtain citizenship and you were so much more advanced than me. We had a coffee ‘To Go' on my birthday while the park was frantic with people enjoying the first warm days. You had to struggle for space to lay out the blankets/mantas/pañuelos (we would always call them mantas).
And of course we did la tienda together! Our plan was to do a real tienda legal for a fortnight or so, with you as my legal vendor selling my artwork. The police would have had no way of interfering with this art act. However, my idea, which shone so brightly at first, carried a million difficulties. We did a tienda ‘manera ilegal’ on a sunny day in March instead. Fortunately, the police didn't turn up.
Mamadou returned to Senegal in October 2023 after three years of struggling hard for citizenship in Spain.
I, as a white European, am able to travel to Senegal to visit him. He on the contrary will most likely never be able to come to Europe again in his lifetime.
One could say the far right has won this case. But Mamadou’s work and presence in Barcelona are now inscribed into art history.

The silk scarfs which I especially hand printed for my #soloexhibition @zeitgeist.zentrum are an echo of what is daily being displayed by People On The Move in the parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona, all under the constant and nerve racking risk of being criminalised through a police raid.
