These photos were taken seven years apart from each other. Same tree. Same con. Same character. Same cosplayer. Yet so much has changed. I didn’t know I was genderqueer in the first photo. That person had no idea we would get top surgery. They had no idea that we would get our masters degree in clinical counseling and would have a waiting list of folks wanting to work with us. They had no idea that we would start showing signs of fibromyalgia a few months after the first photo was taken. They couldn’t imagine the depths of pain and heights of joy we’ve experienced since then. . I’m so grateful for everything that has changed and stayed the same in the last seven years. Reflecting on this through the lens of my cosplay has been a lovely mental journey 💕 . . Wearing Nico di Angelo at Wondercon this past Friday brought me joy I did not expect. I forgot how good it feels to exist with the results of my top surgery on display. Thanks to my hips and thighs, most people assume I’m a woman regardless of my flat chest, which is what it is. Having one day where no one used she/her pronouns when addressing me because they could /see/ me was an experience I didn’t know I wanted. Even better, I felt safe and confident. If looks were thrown my way, I didn’t notice and I just rode the high of /loving/ my body in this cosplay. I hope every trans person gets to experience this. I hope that someday this becomes a normal and common experience for the trans community.
