What was once a gold mine is now one of Canada’s most pressing environmental challenges.
Buried beneath Giant Mine in Yellowknife is 237,000 tonnes of toxic arsenic dust—stored underground to prevent further contamination of nearby lakes, rivers, and soils. The mine is located near 20,000 residents of the City of Yellowknife, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, and other Indigenous communities. PhD student Kevin B. White is using stable isotopes as tools to improve how arsenic remediation is monitored and assessed.
By pursuing a PhD in Earth Sciences, he’s conducting research that makes a real-world impact. Read more about his #GRADimpact at the link in our bio 🔗

As a University of Waterloo student, @kamillaa_k (BASc ’16) didn’t spend her Wednesday nights at Bomber. She was at home watching Survivor.
Ten years after graduating, Karthigesu watched herself play on the show’s 50th season. She also played on Survivor 48, where she reached the final four and formed an iconic secret alliance with Kyle Fraser, the season’s winner.
Read more about Kamilla’a Survivor experience and how her time at #UWaterloo helped her to Outwit, Outplay, and Outlast.

As adults age, depression and executive dysfunction reinforce each other. Depression increases the risk of executive dysfunction, while executive dysfunction can heighten stress and raise the risk of depression.
Taronish Kotwall, an MSc student in the School of Public Health Sciences, explores whether social connection can help protect mental health in adults with executive dysfunction. Her findings could shape future interventions that strengthen social ties and promote healthy aging.

Together with the Office of Indigenous Relations and the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office, the #UWaterlooCommunity came together to recognize the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People. ❤️❤️❤️
Elder Myeengun Henry began the day with a sacred fire on the BMH green and led the hanging of red dresses to symbolize those who are missing and murdered, inspired by Jaime Black’s REDress Project.
The event also featured the Aki Ogichidaa Kewwak N’gamowak Women’s Hand Drum Group followed by a screening of This River, a powerful documentary that offers a first-hand perspective on the devastating experience of searching for a loved one who has gone missing.
Thank you to all who joined today. ♥️
