UMP Colibri is wrapping up the first half of 2023 with a summer staff retreat to brainstorm ideas of how to best serve the families of missing migrants.
Our entire team was in southern Arizona this week and it was beyond wonderful to meet with some of our partners there. Shout outs to Dora Rodriguez from @salvavisionaz , Alba Jaramillo of @southernborder and @iljnetwork , the @confluencenter , and the Mexican Consulate in Tucson, AZ.
Here are some updates from the first half of the year!
-We’ve helped to identify 11 individuals in 2023 (6 Arizona cases and 5 Texas cases) and are awaiting results for another 20 identification hypotheses.
-We’ve responded to more than 270 new inquiries, taken 107 missing persons reports, and collected 48 family reference samples so far this year.
-The Forensic Border Coalition has begun to compare cases with the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification (UNTCHI) Humanitarian DNA Identification Database, a collaboration years in the making that we hope will provide a measure of closure for numerous families waiting for answers.
Please attend The Undocumented Migration Project: Hostile Terrain 94 exhibit on Thursday, May 25, 4-6 pm at The Fowler courtyard.
This is a participatory art exhibition raising awareness about the humanitarian crisis occurring at the U.S.-Mexico Border. “These Flowers are for You” This Dia de las Madres we honor the mothers of missing migrants.
We at the UMP+ Colibri stand in solidarity with these mothers in this time of celebration as they navigate their ambiguous loss.
It is these mothers who make up the Colibrí Family Network, in these drawings they share their stories through art expressing a mother’s tirelessly searching for answers about the unknown fate of their missing children.

Today, on the International Day of the Disappeared, we remember those who lost to the dangerous and deadly policies that endanger migrants on the U.S.-Mexico border. In Pima County alone, over 5,100 migrants have died in their journeys since 2000, of whom nearly 1400 remain unidentified. Today we honor those unique and irreplaceable human beings and their families who are forced to live with the uncertainty of not knowing what has happened to their missing loved one.
We must not let the memory of these thousands of irreplaceable lives disappear. Parents, children, cousins, neighbors, classmates, siblings, friends: their lives mattered and continue to matter. We demand justice for families in their tireless search for answers. We call on the immigrant justice community and all people to remember those the border seeks to invisibilize.
