For years, we have raised alarms about abuse, violence, and rights violations by DHS and the urgent need for strong, independent oversight. Through our legal challenge, we have confirmed what we have known all along – that DHS is avoiding accountability by gutting the oversight offices that Congress created to safeguard our rights, leaving thousands of civil rights complaints about immigration enforcement largely uninvestigated. This is dangerous. When government watchdog offices lose staff and power, the systems meant to investigate abuse and protect our rights begin to disappear. Complaints about excessive force and deaths in custody risk being ignored, with little accountability for the agencies involved. Communities deserve transparency, oversight, and systems that protect human rights — not structures that allow harm to go unchecked.
