“UNCG gave me the space to be authentic as an artist and a person.”
Meet Vesa Basha, the daughter of war refugees from Kosovo. Her life could’ve been so much different if not for the PopTech program and her spirituality.
(Video features Basha’s orginal song “21.”)

As a 2025–26 Pubantz Artist in Residence, sophomore Madison Karan explores big questions about creativity, technology, and what it means to be human through "Apotheosis," a multimedia novel narrated by artificial intelligence after the end of humanity. Her project was inspired by repertoire she performed with the Symphonic Band, Karel Husa’s "Apotheosis of the Earth," which sparked her interest in fictionalizing humanity’s self‑destruction.
Blending writing, original music, and handmade jewelry, Madison’s work invites reflection on the role of AI in creative practice. As Madison puts it, “The arts are a fundamental part of the human experience that cannot be replicated by a machine.”

The @uncgsom and @uncgcsd have teamed up to protect what matters most — hearing. Through hands‑on screenings by audiology students and hearing health education, students gain real‑world clinical experience while supporting the well‑being of @uncg student musicians. This creates meaningful, hands-on learning for the audiology students that strengthens clinical skills, enabling them to see the impact of interdisciplinary teamwork firsthand. Road trip! Over the weekend of February 27–28, UNCG music theory faculty and students traveled to Atlanta for Music Theory Southeast (MTSE). Dr. Karen Messina, Dr. Adam Ricci, and Dr. Gerry Lopez coordinated travel and logistics for the group.
Dr. Ricci opened the conference with its first paper, “An Adventure in 7s: Tigran Hamasyan’s ‘Nairian Odyssey,’” and Dr. Clair Nguyen served on the MTSE program committee. Students also participated in the workshop “Spirituals and Spirituality in Music by Black Composers,” led by Dr. Horace Maxile, Jr.
A wonderful weekend of scholarship, community, and musical exploration for our Spartan music theorists! 💛💙

Be a PAL and Support the UNCG Peer Artist Leadership (PAL) Program! 🎻💙💛
The Peer Artist Leadership (PAL) Program, started in 2014, gives our undergraduate string education and performance majors real, hands‑on teaching experience. Through both one‑on‑one and group lessons with K–12 students, PAL helps bring high‑quality string instruction to underserved youth in Guilford County while helping future music educators grow their teaching and leadership skills.
To keep lessons affordable, PAL depends on yearly support. Donations help cover undergraduate teacher stipends, accompanist fees, meals and snacks for students, and other essential program needs.
Your gift makes a tangible impact:
• $25 helps provide essentials like books, rosin, or new strings
• $50 equips a student with a new bow
• $100 supports a semester of partner lessons
• $250 purchases a violin for a student to use
• $300 funds a semester of private lessons for one student
• $600 covers a full year of lessons for a student
We’d love for you to support the PAL fundraising campaign or become an advocate and be recognized for the impact you make. Just visit the link in our bio!

Talk about 𝘾𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝘾𝙧𝙖𝙛𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙨—the College of Visual and Performing Arts welcomed students across the University to participate in an all-College Inclusive Excellence Event in February.
Thank you to our inspiring panelists Ruth Howard (@mobballet ) and Jake Lane (@sphinxorg ) for leading powerful conversations on redefining excellence, sustaining the arts, and shifting culture from wherever you stand. Through thoughtful dialogue and workshops focused on advocacy and artistic agency, our students gained valuable insight into how artists can shape the future of the field.
Opportunities like this are made possible through the Inclusive Excellence Committee, which works across our college and schools to connect students with industry leaders who are actively evolving the landscape of the visual and performing arts.

We’re excited to share that d.a.l.i.a, led by Greensboro songwriter and @uncg music education faculty member Dr. Dalia Razo, has been named a finalist for the 2026 North Carolina Folk Festival “Not Your Average Folk” Contest! Only three finalists were selected nationwide, and we’re proud that one of them is an ensemble made up entirely of UNC Greensboro faculty, students, and alumni.
Creating original music in English and Spanish, d.a.l.i.a blends traditional Latin American folk instruments with contemporary sound, drawing on Dr. Razo’s Western classical training and Mexican heritage.
Members: Dr. Dalia Razo (faculty), Dr. Scott Glasser (faculty), Jennifer Aikey (student), Zach Baker (alum), Cameron Rabb (alum)

Saxophonist Franco Romero has long dreamed of studying beyond Cuba. “We are lovers of jazz and music in general,” he says, “but the dream is to go out there and learn from the place where jazz originates.”
Romero is now bringing that dream to life at UNC Greensboro. After his early training in Cuba’s conservatory system, a transformative mentorship at UNCG helped guide his artistic direction. Supported by scholarships from the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation, he continues to grow as a forward‑thinking musician within the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program, embracing new opportunities, deepening his craft, and pursuing his passion for jazz with purpose and momentum.

We’re just a few days away from the end of our campaign (link in bio) to support the UNCG Double Reed Studios, and we’re already at 83% of our goal! 🎉
UNCG music students gain exceptional training through lessons, masterclasses, and rich performance opportunities, but many still face out‑of‑pocket costs that limit their ability to fully participate.
For double reed students (oboe and bassoon), reed‑making materials are a major expense. Cane costs $4 per piece for oboe and $5 for bassoon, and students need hundreds each year. All music students also face ongoing costs for piano accompanists required for recitals.
Our Goal
$4,000 to provide 50 pieces of cane annually per double reed student
$1,000 for recital accompanist stipends
This support eases two of the most significant financial pressures our students face, and any additional funds will further strengthen our double reed community.
If you’ve been thinking about giving, now is the perfect time. Every gift helps us reach 100%! Can’t give right now? Sharing this post is another meaningful way to support our students.
