After only one year of ballet training, I was cast as the “The Drummer” in Graduation Ball choreographed by David Lichine to music composed by Johann Strauss II, during the Pennsylvania Ballet School’s Workshop Performance. This ballet was staged by the incomparable Lupe Serrano. She was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had, and the reason I’ve had such an amazing career. I was promoted to an apprentice with @philadelphiaballet after this performance. Now, I get to pass the torch to a new generation of dancers at @butlerballet at @butleru@mobballet #dancersofinstagram #dancer #ballet #dance #blacksinballet
The Hallway Ambush
We’ve all been there. You’re at the studio, you have a concern bubbling up, and you see the teacher walking toward the breakroom. It feels like the perfect time for a 'quick' question, right? 🛑 Wait.
In the ballet world, the 'Hallway Ambush' is one of the quickest ways to unintentionally get your sef placed on a "no fly zone". 📉

This WARMS MY HEART!!!!
@vrsfanatic was one of my favorite teachers when I was a student at Pennsylvania (@philadelpiaballet )!! I was also a student at the Performing Arts School (PAS) with the likes of @dannigeenyc and @christineccox
the founder of @balletx . Actually her mother and my father would sit in the hallways of PBC when it was on Fairmount Avenue and watch class, sew pointe shoes and gossip!! on the first floor the rosin box was in the hall between the two studios, so you would have to step into the hallway... and my father would give me corrections when I stepped out "get your kne back on your frappés the front!" "use your battment for your tour jeté" ooooh I would be so annoyed (but he wasn't wrong". He knew when I I wasn't cutting it - because he understood the form.
HE WAS THE RICHARD WILLIAMS OF BALLET!! He taught himself for ME!!
