Stills from some projects I’ve been lucky to have been a part of recently. Joining the art department has been such a wonderful and enriching addition to my life, bringing a new perspective on the industry I love, new friends and a new skillset where I’m learning every day.
Thanks @joshuahoooper for bringing me into this world. Without your encouragement, I wouldn’t have known where to begin.
Thank you to @millywhitedesign and @thejoemunro for continuing to employ me and being great team players and friends. Also my amazing partner @post_katt for your ongoing support. And all the other wonderful people I have met and worked with this past 6 months. I’m looking forward to the adventure ahead.
Dutch Uncles are back with more timely anti-romance austerity tunes. I was lucky enough to be asked again to make another video with them.
For their sixth album, we went late-night entertainment with a karaoke version of their own song. Singer Duncan Wallis wears a gold Elvis-inspired suit in homage to Britain’s entertainers, singing a live vocal for his band's launch single, the album’s title track, ‘True Entertainment’.
When I was researching Elvis’ gold suit, I found that he actually really hated it and only wore it two or three times. I think the idea of a job that’s meant to bring joy to people’s hearts being really tiring and sometimes hateful really intriguing. I think people can relate to that.

Just to remind everyone that today is the last day the National Gallery is open for a while. Here are some photos from there I took yesterday, which kind of speak for themselves. Look after yourselves in the weeks ahead and look after others too. Your mental health is of great importance at this time, so make sure to remain mindful and present in whatever way you know how.
Some of you may notice I’ve changed my username and are wondering what this new one means. Ukiyo-e is the Japanese title of a film I made in 2012 aka ‘Pictures of the Floating World’ in English. It takes its name from a genre of art developed in industrialising Japan between the 17th and 19th centuries. The most popular prints, such as Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ express the Japanese concepts of mono no aware, or the ephemerality of things. When I lived in Japan, the 2012 Mayan calendar panic was cresting just as Japan was dealing with the reality of the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. My interest in apocalyptic imagery stems from this time and earlier, when I wrote my dissertation on the topic of apocalyptic cinema. At this strange and somewhat unprecedented time of the coronavirus, I want to reflect on the past with you and explore the meaning of the lockdown and social distancing measures through art and through writing. I hope you’ll join me in the discussion. All the best and once again, take care of each other. - Nick
“‘Toompea’ is an exploration of the impact that Soviet oppression in the Baltics had on native artists in the 70s and 80s. It’s written in three movements, representing these artists working in secret, the hope felt during the Baltic Way protests of 1989, and culminates in a dramatic third movement depicting the final turbulent years of Soviet control.” A new video I made for @rodinrichards ’ new EP ‘Castel’ releasing 6th Dec on @prahrecordings

Democracy, Suffrage, Human Rights. The fight goes on. Linking the past with the present, the music below was composed for From The Crowd, a commemorative event, marking 200 years since the Peterloo Massacre, the rights of man are a continuous struggle as current events in Hong Kong attest to.

A new video for a new song by @jescahoopster from her new album STONECHILD. Everything new because life is change. A moment of connection between two strangers and a line of questioning about how the clothes make us. I’m thankful to be able to keep making videos, but mostly thankful to my collaborators.

Big love to Freddie for believing in my writing, which is published in this beautiful new book called ‘Next to Nothing’. Along with an article about how the Fast and the Furious films are some of the most revealing of our times, you can read my interview with @frankleboner about directing some of the most killer music videos around, and how he got his short film ‘Lead’ off the ground with (next to) no money.
