🚀 Our First Quantum Information Seminar is Here! ⚛️ The UBC Quantum Club and the University of British Columbia Department of Physics and Astronomy (PHAS) proudly present the inaugural talk of our Quantum Information Seminar Series: Quantum systems are never truly isolated. Their constant interaction with the environment introduces noise, reshapes dynamics, and challenges the foundations of quantum computing. In this thought-provoking opening seminar, Kyle Monkman explores the frontier of open quantum system theory. Open Quantum System Theory Kyle Monkman

“Metaphors are like models: all are wrong, but some are helpful.” I am so excited to share this work!! These comics are the result of a collaboration between myself and Dr. James Day @jamesday76 an experimental physicist and research associate with the Quantum Matter Institute @ubcquantumscience at the University of British Columbia. Together, we developed these comics with the goal of making a complex subject matter — like quantum numbers — approachable. James and his colleagues developed the metaphors, and I turned them into illustrations! Art and science are not disparate subjects — in fact, they go hand in hand. Mulling over imperfect metaphors, like right vs. left-handedness for binary electron spin, was one of many exercises in the development of these comics that made me even more excited about utilizing science communications through a visual lens. It also made me realize that is so much opportunity to democratize subjects like science, math, law through visual formats. It was a privilege to work with James and a super fun exercise in skills exchange. And, we had so much fun collabing together that there’s more projects to come! 🔬 #quantumphysics #comicstrip
