I just published Gapski to my portfolio, a typeface developed as part of the @typewest program. I’ve been designing typefaces since 2012, but mostly through a background in calligraphy and lettering. Type West has been the chance to go deeper, with more structure and rigor.
Gapski is a revival based on metal type from @tipografiagapski , in Curitiba, Brazil, my hometown. The original type was produced by Funtimod, one of the largest active foundries in Brazil between 1920 and 1970.
This is my first text typeface project, and one of the most rewarding design challenges I’ve taken on. Unlike calligraphy or lettering, type design demands a different kind of commitment, weeks and months of refinement at a level of detail that’s hard to find in any other medium.
As I tell my students: lettering only needs to work for the specific letters in a given piece. Type is different. You’re building a complete system that has to function across every possible combination of letters, punctuation, and spacing.
The family is still evolving, currently expanding from Hairline to Black.
Thanks to the entire Type West team for building a program that genuinely pushes you to think differently. More ahead.

Join us starting on April 22nd, 2026, for an online workshop: Intro to Modern Type Design with @fercozzi_letras
During this 10-week online workshop (Wednesdays from 5 to 8PM PST on zoom), you'll learn what it takes to create your own original typefaces and gain an understanding of the methodologies and software used to produce high-quality digital type.
While focusing on the techniques and best practices for designing and spacing type, Fer will introduce you to the conceptual foundations of type design, including proofing and testing work. Throughout the workshop you'll learn various lessons about type, history, sketching, and get weekly feedback on your projects.
This workshop is suitable for designers starting to think about type and for designers with some type design experience, hoping to improve upon their skills and processes. Some experience with drawing Bézier curves (in Adobe Illustrator, for instance) and with typography is recommended but not required.
If you are interested in joining Type West, our yearlong certificate program in type design, taking this workshop is a great way to build your type design portfolio for its competitive application process.

A portmanteau, Linner can refer to a meal eaten between lunch and dinner. It is a term I am quite fond of, having eaten many linners after school at my family’s Vietnamese restaurant while doing homework or sneakily playing gameboy behind a book at table 17, where my mom could keep an eye on us while manning the register. It’s quite apt that now, a couple decades later, I find myself sustained by many more linners throughout a year of night classes at Type West.
Linner can also refer to a chonky, hopefully tasty (and tasteful) display typeface resulting from some unplanned design constraints: the Sharpie Magnum Marker and a vertical mouse were the only tools I could hold comfortably during the 8 weeks my drawing hand recovered from a freak accident at the gym.
This book is a peek behind the curtain of Linner’s creation and is the culmination of the original typeface assignment during the latter two terms of TypeWest, a year-long program on the study of type design at the Letterform Archive in San Francisco, California.

Bonnie Zhou (@thebonniezhou ) is a Canadian artist and designer based in Brooklyn, New York. Her work explores the visual beauty of language, emphasizing expressiveness, fluidity, and rhythm. Her practice includes Chinese brush calligraphy, neon glass bending, figure painting, and type design, all rooted in same principles of form and movement. In a previous life Bonnie worked as a frontend engineer on Google's Material Design system, where she took her very first type design workshop — and has kept that spark alive ever since.

What would the typeface look like in my dream video game? Mayari started with the visions of games like Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing and Breath of the Wild combined with some of my favorite elements from my childhood like Sailor Moon to create my ultimate cozy game. The typeface would be kinda cute, squishy, magical and full of personality. Mayari takes the logic of a textura calligraphy but with a twist of squish and stardust. It currently has three styles with plans to expand. Mayari is best suited for larger display United Statesge like titles, headlines and oversized copy. Mayari was made to add a little sparkle and magic to everyday life.
April Moralba (@crashboomdesigns ) is a San Diego based graphic designer, illustrator, lettering artist and now baby type designer. She’s known for her playful lettering, whimsical use of color, enthusiastic attitude and coffee shop recommendations. Her breadth of work is diverse experimental and always evolving to perfectly fit the needs of the project at hand. If she’s not drawing letters, she’s probably playing video games, with her daughter at the park or watching a k-drama. Borahae!
