Nearly a fifth of Ireland’s buildings are historic or traditionally built, being constructed from stone or brick, many are underused, vacant, or derelict.
These structures not only embody our cultural heritage but also represent a significant resource.
By carefully adapting and reusing these buildings, we can help lower carbon emissions and create much needed spaces for homes, businesses, and communities.
WORKING BACK = MOVING FORWARD focuses on this historic potential, bringing leading voices from planning, research, urban design, architecture, and architectural conservation for an all day event focused on the adaptive reuse and conservation of historic buildings / places.

Architect @triona_stack Triona Stack speaking on beahalf of the Irish Architects Benevolent Society – the IABS at this years @riaionline RIAI Conference in the RDS.
Crisis can befall any of us and comes in many guises. It can be due to ill health or a death; It can be financial. It may have been predicted or arrive from nowhere. Established in 1959 by and for the architectural community, the IABS is a registered charity which exists to provide assistance to those architects, those technologists, technicians, support staff or their dependants who find themselves in crisis. Some day that could be you, that could be me. Assistance is provided based on individual need and all our work is done in strict confidence. We respond swiftly and provide moral support and guidance in addition to financial assistance to help colleagues through most difficult and distressing times.
Put simply, we have 4 asks of you.
Number 1: come and talk to us. We are a voluntary group and always looking for people to get involved. We welcome ideas, queries, suggestions, enthusiasm…... and coffee.
Number 2: come play with us – we raise funds through our annual events – a coffee morning, a tennis competition, a golf outing – please get involved
Number 3: No big surprise but we need money – you can donate on the website (link in bio) or by Ticking the Box for €30 on your RIAI Membership Form.
Number 4: Finally, and perhaps most importantly, be our eyes and ears. In a crisis it can be hard to know where to go for help. Even at the best of times it can be hard to ask for help. So please, be aware of what we do and perhaps one day let somebody know about the IABS, point them in our direction so that we can do what you have supported us to do.
Thank you.
