REVIEW: Escape the Rat Race by @treesapgames
Escape the Rat Race is a competitive card game that sees you building up your characters' experiences over 4 decades. The first player that manages to gather 3 cards in each decade (20,30,40 and 50's) they win.
Gameplay is really easy to get into. Players will be either a professional or an entrepreneur and will have a hand of cards. On your turn you'll draw a salary card giving you an amount of money to spend on cards, and then you an play as many cards as you wish. There are action cards that have different abilities. Some benefit you directly, others influence opponents.
Thoughts:
🐭Very quick and easy to set up and play. This fits in as a game I would play with more casual gamers for its ease of access.
🐭Professionals and entrepreneurs gain different amounts from the salary cards which was interesting. The professionals have quite a balanced amount they gain each turn whereas the entrepreneur is risky, you could earn nothing one turn or get 20k to spend another turn! This did seem to balance fairly well, though luck does come into it somewhat.
🐭I liked that there are wild cards included which count towards any decade, this helped a little for giving more options to finish your decades.
🐭The take that elements weren't too harsh, some cards (taking an unfinished decade from an opponent) did feel a little harsh still though and worth considering if you're not a fan of take that style games.
🐭The art is really fun, theres a lot of character in the artwork that matches the experiences well.
Overall this is a fun little game, it's a good option for a filler game or a quick game. The player interaction is good with a lot of flow due to the action cards which made for an engaging game. If you're not a fan of some take that elements you could always remove those cards from the game, but i felt the take that elements were light enough that you felt you were progressing still and had a good chance of making a comeback after them.

In escape the rat race, you are either an entrepreneur or a professional earning an undetermined wage each turn. Play life events ranging from your 20s to 50s -Three placed life experiences for each decade will win you the game. Easy, right?
This game is swingy; you can't bank on a steady wage, you can't even guarantee your cards will stay in front of you, but it's also incredibly quick - giving it that "one more try" appeal.
⏳ 20m - I'd probably put 15-25, so pretty accurate. The more you play, the faster the turns become and the less attached to your cards you get.
🎂 7+ - We didn't play with a child, but my husband all but flipped the table on some games... It's a mean game when it needs to be, but those cards could easily be removed making it more child (husband) friendly.
🧑🧑🧒🧒 2-5 players - The fewer the players, the more focused some of those 'take that' cards can be!
🖤 What I liked:
* Handy small box size!
* Quick playtime means that it makes for a tasty filler game
* Tongue-In-Cheek references woven into the cards
* The unpredictability of the two different professions
✌️ What I would have liked:
* There are two different art styles in the game; one was more my taste and one was not. It certainly didn't alter the gameplay, but it felt a little odd
* Some modular adaptations for when you're playing with a fewer play counts, so one person doesn't get stuck being battered around after round
* Some sort of catch up mechanism
