It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, so I wanted to chat to you a little bit about my own experiences. I’ve never done this publicly before, so I’m really thankful to @asmodeeuk and @mindcharity for giving me this opportunity. The bottom line of all of this is… board games are good for the soul. They’ve been a real help to me over the years, and I’d love to hear more about how board games support your mental health. I’m so excited that @asmodeeuk and @mindcharity are in a three year partnership together. It’s really going to bring so much mental health awareness to so many people, and help create those moments of joy and connection. I’m looking forward to be working with these guys on some extra special videos coming very soon. Do you know Catan? It was one of the first board games I played as an adult with my family! A few years ago, we spent a weekend together—skiing during the day and playing Catan at night. I was so excited to hear they released Catan on the Go this year—a compact card version perfect for travelling. We couldn’t wait to try it, and we loved it! It’s quicker and easier than the classic, but keeps the same core idea and is so much fun. 🎲 Board game of the day – My Unlock! game collection! 💥 As you know, the “Unlock!” series is one of my absolute favorite board games. After hearing the great news this weekend that the next “New Game Adventures” box will include another one of my favorite games, “7 Wonders,” I just thought, “Shut Up and Take My Money!” So I thought, let's dig out my Unlock collection and take some nice pictures 📸 * Game: Unlock! * Genre: Card Game/Puzzle/Adventure/Real-time/Cooperative Game * Publisher: Space Cowboys/Asmodee * Playing Time: 30-60 minutes * Players: 1-5 Unlock! is a cooperative card game inspired by escape rooms that uses a simple system which allows you to search scenes, combine objects, and solve riddles. Play Unlock! to embark on great adventures, while seated at a table using only cards and a companion app that can provide clues, check codes, monitor time remaining, etc. The Unlock series even received a special award from the “Game of the Year” jury in 2023. It's no secret that I only played it for the first time last year and thoroughly enjoyed myself (and every play since). In my view it's a classic for a reason and will be staying in my collection. REVIEW: Catan on the Road by @asmodeeuk Catan on the Road is a distilled card version of the classic Catan. Impressively the gameplay has been condensed into a card game that plays in about 15-30 minutes, with most of the key mechanics remaining similar. Your aim is to be first to get 7VP. You do this by building cities or metropolises, gathering Knights into the largest army, or building roads into the longest road. You still have the ability to trade with opponents, but the key difference is that instead of rolling dice to gain resources, you'll draw resource cards on each player's turn, and the active player draws extra for every city and metropolis they have. Add in some action cards with various abilities and you have the familiar game of Catan with a few twists making it much more accessible! Thoughts: 🏠One of my main gripes with standard Catan is the time it takes to play, so having a portable option that keeps the main flavour of Catan while also playing in significantly less time is a big positive for me. 🏠You do lose a little of the strategy over where you choose to place settlements/roads, and the resource gathering is quite luck based . Where you had probability on your side somewhat limiting luck, now its dependent on what cards you draw and what's left in the deck. 🏠The cards and symbology make it very easy to keep track of points. 🏠I like that longest road and largest army are still a key element of the game, and they are arguably easier to track now. 🏠I like that trading is still a part of the game, and that you have the ability to trade with the supply. This is linked to how many roads you have. The more roads the better exchange rate you get. This also serves as a way to set base negotiation expectations when trading with opponents. 🏠While symbology isnt tok overwhelming, some cards don't have any text (e.g. Knights/settlements) and it would have been easy to add this text to cards. Overall, Catan on the Road is a really good option if you're looking for a quicker version of Catan, it's very accessible and portable too. It has a lot of game for a small box!

🎲 Catan: On The Road 🎲 👥 3-4 👶🏻 15+ 🕰️ 15mins 🧩 Catan is a 1990 gaming classic that almost all gamers have either played or heard about. Your goal is to collect 10VP by building roads, settlements and cities. Players will also score points by either having the longest road or having knight cards. The main draw of Catan though is its heavy reliance on player interaction through trading and bartering for the resources you need, as different spots on the map generate a variety of things like brick, wheat, sheep etc. On The Road is a new pocket sized edition that setup and play quickly 🧩 Although it lacks the board and dice of the original, the spirit of Catan is still very prominent here. You will build and trade, get the longest road or suffer the consequences of the robber but with a tableau system of cards. The game has a harvest and action phase, which repeats until the win condition of 7VP is met. Players draw a random resource card and then take turns trading and/or building. You will generate more resources by having more cards played in front of you. More roads mean better trade odds, settlements let you draw cards, cities trigger events etc. It’s an incredibly easy to understand and quite fluid system. The randomness is still there but the more you play cards the greater your turns become. 🧩 It’s still got the same few issues I have with Catan but for some reason, maybe it’s the lack of the cursed dice, I actually had a better time with this one. It’s a shame it needs exactly 3-4 players to work and the box maybe start to break over time but for its size and price, I couldn’t complain really. 🧩 Overall, while it doesn’t completely change or ramp up the original formula but On The Road does provide a great little card game with plenty of social interaction and cutthroat strategies. The fact you can see a row of cards to buy from means you can monitor everyone’s progress and what they will go for, allowing for some intense gaming sessions..if your into mean games that is😅 🏆 Final Score ▶️ B+ 🏆 Game gifted by @asmodeeuk & @masonwilliamspr #catan #catanontheroad #asmodee #boardgames #cardgames
