The CD contains ten covers of 78-era songs by artists such as Luther Dickinson, Eden & John’s East River String Band (w/ Eli Smith & R.Crumb), William Tyler, Muireann Bradley, Gwenifer Raymond, Michael Hurley and more. Eight of the ten songs were recorded specifically for the project. Rarely post anything “personal” here, but today is release day for Tompkins Square progeny, lucky break. I had exactly zero to do with her being discovered by her manager Brandon Stosuy and subsequently signed to Fire Records, a label I have followed since playing Television Personalities on my college radio station in 1989. To have her releasing records on this hallowed label alongside Mekons, Dream Syndicate or Bevis Frond is beyond surreal. But what is even more astounding is to watch her creative development right before my very eyes/ears, having composed and recorded the bulk of her next album in our house. Songs like “Spinning Cup” (my favorite), “Camp Song”, “Head Down”, “Darklight”, “Big Swing” or “Crush” reveal the range of influences soaked up through hours of listening on Avenue B in NYC or here in SF, along with her own sonic explorations growing up a child of Katy and Taylor. They also reveal her giving soul and deep humanity. (I don’t know if Vanilla Fudge made it into this mix, but if you hear any, the picture above might explain it !..) 🎶 ✨ 🌿 Maisy Owen — Dark On A Sunny Day (out today on @@tompkins_square ) Producer and musical authority Joe Boyd describes Nashville-born and based singer-songwriter @maisy0wen as having “an original voice with no modernist cliches in her singing or songwriting.” On the evidence of her debut “Dark On A Sunny Day,” he’s called this one right. Produced by @robineatonmusic and recorded with the specific intent of putting these songs front and centre, this is a singer-songwriter album that, for a first attempt, shows remarkable maturity and a kind of timelessness in her style. Early influences like Nick Drake, Bert Jansch and Mazzy Star filter through in a way that honours their understated power as much as their introspection. ‘My Youth Is All For You’ sets the scene with picking that works as both an aural cloth and a rhythm marker. The title track is outstanding, hinting at likely future adventures in cosmic Americana. ‘The Rest Of Me’ could be sold as a Vashti Bunyan outtake. ‘God Fear’ marks her card as not belonging wholly to the Nashville collective. I started working on this project with @robineatonmusic after my first show in september of 2024. HAPPY 85th BIRTHDAY, American Primitive OG HARRY TAUSSIG ! Released as a short-run private press LP in 1965, Fate Is Only Once has long been a coveted collectible among American Primitive guitar enthusiasts. The only other recorded work by Taussig surfaced on the out-of-print Takoma LP Contemporary Guitar Spring ‘67 alongside John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Max Ochs and Bukka White. “Dorian Sonata” was featured on the acclaimed acoustic guitar compilation Imaginational Anthem Vol. 1.
