Absolutely banging post-Clayfest building tour at the ever inspiring @william.stanwix barn refurb. So much clay and hemp. (And, annoyingly, off the back of this, a total revision of plans for my place). Also annoying is that I totally forgot to take any pictures of the underside of his incredible roof. Clay plaster using crushed broken tiles from the old roof. A beautiful earthy red between the rafters. Instead you'll have to enjoy the beautiful clay floor and plaster on hempcrete walls, including the most remarkable polished black bathroom wall.

I spent Monday and Tuesday clay plastering, chatting clay, and listening to big brains proselytising on clay, chalk, fibres and all things earth construction. So many excellent people sharing knowledge and skills.
Conference tomorrow and I'll be back up there talking about @architectscan tonight with the brilliant @atelier.baulier and @some.kind.of.nature.msa .

The last bit of roof insulation in this sandwich of woodfibre. A typically irregular shape, tapered along it's length, 15° along one edge, 30° at the back. But a pleasingly snug fit!
In this section of house the roof is insulated below the rafters, 35mm rigid, 140mm flexi, AVCL, 35mm rigid. Plastering direct to wood fibre. The mad zone in this video shows the area where this approach meets the other roof with insulation above the rafters. Making the two come together without a break in the thermal/airtightness envelope was a bit of a headscratchy nightmare. But it's done now. Thank goodness.

Paper AVCL, taped around ties for tightness, furry tape to plaster for plastering over. Coarse harl coat on the walls to aid plaster hold. One more layer of rigid woodfibre insulation below the rafters and 60mm of insulating plaster on the walls.

I've heard mixed things about the insulating plaster I'm planning on using (Diathonite Thermactive) but I'm using this space as a bit of an experiment. The rest of the house will be 60mm wood fibre IWI. Will be comparing performance of both.

More woodfibre business. Finally got the preparatory works done before insulating the bathroom roof. There's 40mm of rigid woodfibre directly below the rafters, 140mm deep rafter extensions (reclaimed skinny CLT), filled with flexi wood fibre. Next AVCL under rafters. The walls have been dubbed out and mortar run along junctions with roof. This gives us something to stick the airtightness tape to, to be plastered over with insulating plaster. Finally, rigid woodfibre again under the AVCL, then clay plaster. At some point before 2027. So now you know.
Did a talk at Futurebuild the other day, for @architectscan Natural Materials group (of which I'm a coordinator). I talked about the woodfibre insulation-y bits of my roof build, from an installer's POV. Basically said woodfibre insulation lends itself very well to a carpenter's mind- and skill-sets. It's also really nice to handle and work with which encourages better workship... And that makes all the difference thermally. Some of the slides here. Sorry if you've seen them already!

My very first solar installation. Me plus an electrician and about 3 hours. Not perfect but not too bad. Would have preferred black rails but they weren't available. Which is both stupid and annoying. They're not as pretty as the slate below but they do generate more electricity.

What an insane year. You may have noticed I dropped off the retrofit update stories. As one population was having its entirety obliterated with the backing of our own government and so much of our media failing to tell the truth of this story, it felt so wrong to publish the details of my safe, comfortable labours. But we have been pushing on and this is where I'm leaving the exterior for the year. No ridge, no fascias, no gutters or PV. Oh, and no windows. But we're getting somewhere. Reclaimed slate and loads of lead, all on 180mm of woodfibre insulation, from a total of 220mm, to be completed in the new year. It's not quite cozy yet, but it will be. Happy Xmas, y'all.
