Hi DMV/Baltimore folks! This summer, I’ll be teaching two clay workshops @materialthingsstudio . The first is a workshop designed for K-12 teachers who either currently teach ceramic units in their art classes - or want to begin. We’ll be covering material basics geared for a school setting, a variety of demo strategies, and lots of unit ideas and prototyping. Nothing makes me happier than to help other K-12 teachers make clay more accessible, more interesting - and easier to manage. So I really hope you join! Clay experience for this one is not necessary. The second is a workshop that I’ll be co-teaching with Katie Aldworth, the head potter for the production pottery side of things @materialthingsstudio . We’ll be covering how to throw repeat forms on the potters wheel and how to implement a variety of altering techniques with consistency in mind. For the wheel throwers out there, hope you join us!

Last summer, @jeremiahcibarra very kindly gave me these plant cuttings. After living in yogurt containers and tupperware with holes punched in the bottom, they finally have a new home in some terracotta planters (fired to cone 2 for that extra bit of toasty flavor). Come see Jeremiah and I collaborate on all things planter this upcoming weekend while we demo at the lovely @materialthingsclasses 🌱 Saturday, May 31st, 10a - 4p. Link in bio. 🌱 We’ll be making planters large and small, traditional and funky! *Not a plant person? It’s ok. We still think you should come. Everything discussed will apply to your non-plant functional forms too.

We are incredibly excited to have the duo of Material Things teacher/artist @tom.k.doyle and MICA professor/visiting artist Jeremiah Ibarra teaching our upcoming planters workshop together! More about them: Tom K Doyle grew up in Pittsburgh, PA playing basketball in the driveway and listening to his mom’s CD collection. He is now an artist and an educator who loves helping students of all ages find joy in making something with their own hands. He holds a BFA in Ceramics and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Maryland Institute College of Art. Jeremiah Ibarra is a multidisciplinary artist native to San Angelo Texas, a city built on a bed of caliche along the Concho River. In 2014, He earned an MFA from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi where he studied under Louis Katz and Amber Scoon. Jeremiah has been invited to participate in a number of artist residencies, which include the Chautauqua School of Art, New Harmony Clay Project, 100 West Corsicana, and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. Exhibitions include: The 20th San Angelo National Ceramics Competition at SAMFA, Clay National XVII - The Autobiography of the Object at Carbondale Clay Center, and the 31st Annual Strictly Functional Pottery National in Lancaster, PA. He is currently a Resident Artist for The Clay Studio in Philadelphia and teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art. LINK TO THEIR UPCOMING Workshop IN BIO!

🪴 Workshop announcement 🌱 How lucky am I that I get to lead another workshop with @jeremiahcibarra ? Join us Saturday, May 31st, for a planter-making workshop for both thrower and handbuilder, hosted at the wonderful @materialthingsstudio . Jeremiah and I will split the day between individual work time and side-by-side demos on how to make large flower pots, oval planters, and succulent containers. The workshop runs from 10-4 with an optional lunch you can add on to your order from @manifest_bread . I’m thinking of going for the rapini, chickpeas, and feta on focaccia. But which cookie to get…? Link in bio to sign up. Hope you do!

Please join us in welcoming Tom K Doyle (@tom.k.doyle ) to Artaxis. He writes, “Can you remember the feeling of crawling into a blanket fort? When a bed sheet draped over a couch could transport you? Sounds outside soften, light sneaks through cracks between pillows, and the blanket above - now a roof - shields all those inside your invented fortress. I can recall building many such forts with my brother, John, who passed away by suicide in 2015. Knowing that, I imagine these sculptures might read a bit like nostalgic miniatures, but they are more sanctuary than replica. Every decision to place a chair there, stack a pillow here, scribble color as a child might, is a decision made to transform the everyday with levity and construct an opening. The forts are an opportunity for play within the space of grief — a way to introduce choice making and creation in a situation that weighs heavy with finality.” Learn more and find Tom’s new Artaxis page at /artist/tom-k-doyle/ #artaxis #ceramics #contemporaryceramics #tomkdoyle

I am still wrapped up in the magic that was my time at @watershedceramics earlier this month. Infinite thanks to @jeremiahcibarra who helped co-organize the two-week residency we called Red Handed, a celebration of red clay and themes of exploration and play. Every call with Jeremiah, every draft of our application, every trip to get ice cream - was a blast. And can we talk about the folks who joined our session? Listen. We lucked out. Each day the studio was full of laughter and good music (I raise a glass to @katwest.ceramics for that one). I hear we also may have been awarded the title of snack-iest session. I wear that badge with honor. Thank you to all who came - cant wait for our paths cross again. And to the staff at Watershed, thank you for helping to navigate any issue that popped up, for serving great meals, and making us feel welcome each day. Special shoutout to @mattdercoleart along with @chris__mitchell_art for keeping the studio in such great shape. And what luck that our session ended with the Salad Days event. Yall put together a really great afternoon of pottery and pottery-lovers. I appreciated getting the chance to demo alongside the wonderful @heg_mowton , @cm_ceramics , and @ferrantejames . And a last thank you to @hiprandy at @chasesgarage for hosting Jeremiah and I on both ends of the trip and for hosting me every Maine trip I’ve made for the last seven years!
