Some folks just live in unabashed joy. As I was in line on the jetway to board my flight this morning I heard this voice in the distance giving a full a capella concert. Yacht rock style songs so you know I was feeling it. Can't recall the 1st tune but I can hum it. Part of me quickly assumed someone was a little off today. The songs kept coming. As I approached the plane doors I saw it was the jetway baggage handler living his best life. He wasn't looking for attention. There was zero ego & zero shame in his game. I'm sure he had bills & quarrels & hard things to face but he chose joy. I'm guessing it's his default. I sang along in harmony. Full voiced. The BeeGees HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE. This woman, my Mommy (with my sister from another mister), deserves so much more than the universe is handing her of late. I want this Mother's Day to start my Mother's Year. A full 365 of relative ease and comfort and joy and pride and respect and love. Happy Mother's Day to all the black Queens who hold shit down in ways they'll never be thanked for. The episode is called Roleplay. And we do, don't we? I like it better when we don't... Filmed this while directing @ruebayouthemusical during the days and performing @chasinggracemusical at night. Then jumped directly on a plane to meet the company of strangers who poured back into me what I poured into them. They are strangers no more. They fed my hollowing soul and became family. Not role-playing. Honest living when I truly needed it. Came home to calamity and hope, to new life and a literal building fire, to rebuilding...again. But this week, in the midst of so much chaos, I was reminded that if I keep showing up with that TLee purpose and intention and not just to play a role, my people - my real and true people - will reflect back to me who I am. Because I know Kings, Queens and warriors and THEY SHOW UP. Thank you to the people in my world who ain't role-playing, but living life with me. In truth and transparency. I see you. I choose you. I love you.
