This 1945 Eames Childs Chair was found broken, in March of this year. After consultation with experts @eamesinstitute and others, it has been properly repaired and preserved. It’s funny what you can find on the inter webs these days, including this curious piece of design history. This promotional photo and letter was sent to clients of Alfred Auerbach Associates sometime in the 1950s. Love the logo, hand written markings and fold-over design. The letter describes the virtues of modern design for the office, this time for TV personality Robert Q. Lewis (look him up, a lot of history there). Featured are furniture by the office of George Nelson for Herman Miller, a Lightolier lamp, and perhaps an Alexander Girard window covering...? The little dolls are very cute as well. Alfred Auerbach Associates was a design consulting firm in New York. Auerbach was well connected to those on the leading edge of design in the midcentury, championing the early work of Charles and Ray Eames and many others. He was a sponsor of the “Good Design” exhibition and a juror for the International Competition for Low-cost Furniture Design at MoMA in 1950. He was also an editorial associate at Arts & Architecture magazine.

Some interesting variations. As we know, cameras and screens will not be 100% true to color. And these chairs are perhaps 60+ years old. I know for a fact that the chair on the left is Red Orange, chair on the right is faded Red Orange. The chair in the middle? Most likely Terra Cotta, as it has too much red to be Ochre Dark (see last week's post). Beautiful, none the less. "An Eames Celebration: Several Worlds of Charles and Ray Eames" was produced by Perry Miller Adato for WNET/13 in 1973. I recently acquired this 16mm film print, which is complete and in good condition, despite the beginnings of vinegar syndrome. You can find a version of this on SCI-Arc's Media Archive Youtube channel, but I think the reels are in the wrong order, and it doesn't seem complete. In a past career I was a film technician and still have access to editing and projection equipment. My goal, after cleaning and preservation, is to eventually screen this for friends, along with a copy I have of "Powers of Ten". Anyone who knows me knows my Dad was passionate about Willys Jeeps. He restored many, repaired even more. At the request of MoMA, he sent them a WWII Jeep tire for an exhibition (MoMA has included the Jeep in several exhibitions over the years, including 1951's "8 automobiles: an exhibition concerned with the esthetics of motorcar design". Since his passing in January, we have been sorting through his collection of memorabilia. I always knew there was a connection between modern design ideals and the Willys Jeep, as wartime functionality transitioned to postwar optimism. This sales brochure from 1949 captures the moment perfectly, when that optimism was in full swing. Note the Saarinen Knoll chair, modern interior, and Harper Richards architecture.
