Timon Benson 💫 #NCArtistInFocus⁠ ⁠ @timonbenson (b.1998, UK, based in Manchester) is a photographic artist whose work is concerned with relationships. For example, relationships between people, between places/spaces and between feelings. Exhibitions include Voice of Matter, Heaven 11, Manchester, 2025, Royal Photographic Society IPE 166, Saatchi Gallery, London 2025, Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize, National Portrait Gallery, London, 2025, Open Walls, British Journal of Photography, Arles, 2025, Voice of Matter, Webber Gallery, London, 2025. Timon is the recipient of the Photoworks R&D Grant and Format Portfolio Review Award. “I long for what I call sustained immediacy, which I understand to be eternal issues, relevant for human consideration. How to be a son, a friend, a meaningful, sensitive human, in the world, but also to be valuable to myself. What I put into the camera, and what comes out on the paper goes through an internal emotional process which I hope has resonance for all of us. 'Compression' is the photograph that I selected for NC because it feels like a stand alone piece that contains a broad range of experiences inspired from an earlier time in my life. It is the type of image that takes a while to process, and I hope it will function as a way of slowing the viewer down in what will be a very dynamic exhibition.” Timon's work and more is on view at the @southlondongallery 30 January – 12 April and @mimauseful , Middlesbrough 8 May – 16 August. My debut solo exhibtion ‘Voice of Matter’ is now open at @heav11n until the 10th of August. The exhibition has received support from @aceagrams @grain_projects @southernandpartners ‘’This exhibition presents a threefold approach to photography. We see intimate portrayals of friends, the painting of light through cameraless luminograms, and an amalgamation of these two practices. While Benson is known for his realist portraits of youth, family and friendship, Voice of Matter marks a new shift in Bensons methodology - an embrace of abstraction and intuition. Throughout his process, Benson surrenders to instinct as both a practical gesture and conceptual inquiry. Each photograph approaches the question : what does it feel like to be incredibly alive? Throughout this inquiry, Benson positions light as central, serving as both subject matter and medium.  This exhibition investigates the intricacies of the human condition and the potential for human emotion to suspend time - a notion reflected in the very nature of the photograph itself.
